1.
INTRODUCTION
1.1
In November 2002 Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out a programme of archaeological recording for Mr and Mrs Quigley at Peardrop Cottage, 22 Gloucester Street, Winchcombe, Gloucestershire (centred on NGR: SP 2819 0218, Fig. 1).
1.2
The programme of archaeological recording was undertaken to fulfil a condition attached to a planning consent for an erection of a conservatory to the rear of Peardrop Cottage (planning ref: 02/11059/1115/FUL). The objective was to record all archaeological remains exposed during the development.
1.3
The archaeological fieldwork was carried out in accordance with a written scheme of investigation (WSI) produced by CA (2002) and approved by the LPA acting on the advice of Mr Charles Parry, Senior Archaeological Officer, Gloucestershire County Council. The fieldwork also followed the Standard and Guidance for an Archaeological Watching Brief issued by the Institute of Field Archaeologists (1999) and the Statement of Standards and Practices Appropriate for Archaeological Fieldwork in Gloucestershire (GCC 1995).
The site
1.4
The site lies to the rear of the existing property at approximately 98m AOD (Fig. 2).
1.5
The underlying geology of the area is mapped as Lower Lias of the Jurassic era (Geological Survey 1981). This was not encountered during the course of the groundworks.
1.6
The land is currently used as a patio area leading to the rear garden.
Archaeological background
1.7
The site lies within the historic core of Winchcombe in close proximity to the Abbey precinct. Winchcombe is recorded as a royal centre in the Saxon period. The Abbey of St Mary was founded in 811, later becoming a Benedictine community in c.969. In 1539 it was dissolved with the buildings being given to Lord Seymour who

carried out the demolition. The extent of the medieval development of Gloucester Street remains undetermined although the presence of property boundaries mirroring that of tenements and burgage plots is evidenced by later cartographic sources.
Methodology
1.8
The fieldwork followed the methodology set out within the WSI (CA 2002). An archaeologist was present during intrusive groundworks, comprising the hand excavation of foundation trenches and drainage runs (Fig. 2).
1.9
Written, graphic and photographic records were compiled in accordance with the CA Technical Manual 1: Excavation Recording Manual (1996).
1.10
Subject to the agreement of the legal landowner the finds and site archive will be deposited with Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum under accession number 2002.205
2.
RESULTS
2.1
The earliest deposit encountered was sandy clay 104 identified at the limit of excavations in the south-west footing trench (see Fig 2 for location of extent). It contained occasional limestone fragments and mortar, although no artefactual material was retrieved. It was overlain by silty clay garden soil 103, typically 0.7m in depth, which was in turn sealed by modern gravels and paving slabs.
3.
DISCUSSION
3.1
Despite the archaeological potential of the application area (see archaeological background above), no archaeological remains, excepting deposit 104, were identified within the area of observed groundworks. Interpretation of deposit 104 is restricted by its limited exposure during the current groundworks, although a possible surface or demolition debris of medieval or post-medieval date may be suggested.
The further absence of archaeological deposits may indicate that

structural remains associated with the Saxon and medieval settlements either do not extend as far as or were not exposed by the development.
4.
CA PROJECT TEAM
Fieldwork was undertaken by Kate Cullen, who also compiled this report. The illustrations were prepared by Lorna Gray. The archive has been compiled by Kate Cullen, and prepared for deposition by Ed McSloy. The project was managed for CA by Cliff Bateman.
