Check‐in and Introductions: Say hi. Share how it’s going with your role. Share successes, challenges, and needs.
Raven (Rebecca) – I just got back from an awesome bike trip. Just now, Sonrisa and I had a good meeting planning Cabin Life stuff. We’ve both contacted all our Area Leads, and their contacting their Cabin Counselors. We’re going to be looking at all the campers who overlap both weeks. Things are going well.
Wedge (Reid) – Things are going well. I’ve met with one C.A.R.E. team member and have chatted with another. We’ve gone over goals, plans, and questions. I’ve done one other interview that kind of doubled as planning. That person was Minion. Monroe told me Sunday that we have three more applications. Monroe is doing two interviews of those three, and I’ll do one. The idea is to figure out if this is the right fit for them. I feel good. I had a great chat with Smash and with Kerb on Sunday, and I chatted with Otter, who was on the team two years ago. I feel good about building on the past history, and I just need to start planning more specifically. I have yet to talk with Surreal about his specific plans…or with Anya, who’s been in London. I’m thinking about reaching out to other volunteers. There’s still lots of things I want to do, but there are no more bike trips happening, so from here to camp, this is what I’m doing.
Lynx (Emma) – I’m ironing out intensive stuff, getting people contacted. I met with GRIZZ and Ocean to get a better idea of how things work. That was really helpful. I talked with people on Sunday at the BBQ. The more I talk and meet with people the more pieces I’m able to put together.

Camp Ten Trees Summer Camp Volunteer Coordinators and C.A.R.E./Med/MH Leads Tuesday, July 9th, 2013 Meeting Sonrisa (Sadie) – I have a similar check‐in as Raven. I’m still waiting for a few Area Leads to get back to me after talking with their people. I’m getting ready to head out of town again (Thursday through Sunday), and I will be more available again after that.
Panhandle (Airen) – Check‐in/check‐out location is set up. Clutch will be coordinating rides to/from training, host stays for out‐of‐town volunteers, and .
Pinkerbell (Tiff) – Things are going well. I am meeting Random Fandom (Community Activities Specialist) right after this. I have been talking with Pan‐cake. I have been talking with TRIXX, Pan‐cake, and some other people about other ideas for activities to replace “Cross The Field”…perhaps something called “Penetrate The Circle.” (Monroe explains “Cross The Field” to Lynx and highlights that it’s not working as well as it used to work now that our camp has so many more people. Monroe will connect with Pinkerbell after the meeting to talk more about her new idea.)
Monroe (Cori) – Things are going okay. I’m a bit stressed. It’s showing. My apologies. There’s always more to do it seems that can be done in any given day or week. I am totally excited to be here with folks looking at training. Breez might be joining us later. Clutch might be joining us later. Bubbles will not be here, as she’s out of town.
Clutch (Connor) – Arrived late, no check‐in Discussion of Training: Monroe led the group through a review of the content we need to cover at training. People shared ideas of (a) where they think it’s being covered according to the current draft of the training schedule and (b) what formats will work best for covering which portions of content. In short, we looked fore where and how the content is being covered or addressed. We didn’t get through all the content at the meeting, but here’s a list of what we discussed.
The Content Getting to Know Each Other Connecting people across different realms Community Agreements
Developing shared understanding and commitment to the Mission, Values, and Commitment to Social Justice Developing skills and awareness of a variety of social justice issues as pertains to supporting campers Learning songs
Where is it being covered? What format should this training segment take? Games, Training cabin groups, Name tags, Special seating during meals, Prompts/questions to discuss while we move from one activity to the next (generate a list of these for Monroe) Covered by many segments of training in the current draft Bring list of Community Agreements, compiled from past trainings, and add to it if needed; Plan time to check in about agreements at regular intervals throughout training; Using a fishbowl model, have people act out agreements rather than using the usual in‐speak/language Use an introductory framework in which we present the basics of Mission/Values/Commitment to Social Justice briefly and then move into scenarios, skits, etc.; Focus on storytelling for our examples of Values, bringing the authenticity of our camp sessions; Set the expectation that we approach these things as our lens for camp sessions not as a way to instruct volunteers to conduct their lives in general, i.e. we just need to agree to these for the duration of the camp sessions. Workshops/Skill Development @ Youth Engagement, Workshops/SJ Skills Development
These people will get together to write some scenarios for use during the Friday 7‐8 p.m. training segment: Raven, Sonrisa, Lynx, Wedge, Pinkerbell, and Panhandle First night of training campfire, Learn by doing, Need a standard model for teaching songs (one that includes a clear announcement at the beginning of each song of how it will be done)
Camp Schedule/Traditions (e.g. flagpole, musical offering) How to lead engaging activities/engage youth
Pinkerbell will ask Random Fandom to create a list of camp song titles. Non‐role‐playing role plays, Training cabin groups, Saturday at training modeled on a camp day, Family style meals on Saturday.
Panhandle will create a quick cheat sheet/bullet list of Dining Hall rules/expectations. This can then be shared with leaders of training cabin groups so that they can inform their groups and discuss at training. Choice activity time slot on Saturday of training, Fishbowl style with inner group actually doing an activity and outer group observing for the first half hour followed by a debriefing by all
That’s as far as we made it through the list! Cori will use this input to further revise the training draft and will then share it with us by July 19th. Notes by Airen “Panhandle” Lydick
