Policies and Procedures Melissa Middle School 2017-2018

1st Period

Arrival: 8:10 – 8:45 ⦿

Parents should drop students off between the Competition Gym and the MMS Campus. The carpool line must be a single file line for safety. ⦿ If your parents need to come into the school, they must sign in through the office.

When you arrive at school, you are supposed to go directly to the cafeteria. You may NOT hang out in courtyard or play wall ball, soccer, etc. Bus will enter through cafeteria back door. Doors do not open until 8:10. Breakfast is served from 8:10 – 8:40. You must be in class by 8:45. Tardy? You MUST get a pass in the office. Athletes will follow the procedures established by coaches.

2nd Period

Dress Code Dress Standards: ⦿ Clothing, including t-shirts, which display sexually oriented or explicit material, violence, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, gang or hate slogans or pictures deemed inappropriate by school officials. ⦿ No inappropriately worn or distracting clothing (e.g., too-tight tops or pants, lycra, spandex).

Straps on shirts and tops must be at least two inches in width to be considered acceptable. All undershirts must meet the minimum standards as listed above if visible. No sports jerseys, tanks, halters or spaghetti straps unless worn with appropriate undershirt. No backless tops No holes or tears No pajamas (unless designated by campus administration for special occasions) No exposed cleavage Must cover front and back midriff at all times whether standing, sitting, stretching or bending Must be able to be tucked in No see through (thin or mesh)

2nd Period

Dress Code Pants/Shorts/Skirts ⦿ ⦿ ⦿ ⦿ ⦿

Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee on any side. Leggings, tights or yoga pants must be worn with attire that meets the minimum standard for shorts or skirts, OR with an untucked shirt that comes down to mid-thigh. Must not be worn below the waist (“sagging” garments are not acceptable). No pajamas (unless designated by campus administration for special occasions). No blankets or stuffed animals. Tears, cuts, rips and/or holes 3 inches above the knee are not allowed if it exposes the skin or undergarment.

2nd Period

Dress Code Piercings:

⦿ All facial or body piercing will be prohibited; clear spacers will be acceptable unless deemed distracting by an administrator/designee. ⦿ Only earrings allowed - no gauges. ⦿ Earrings, studs, and traditional jewelry are acceptable.

Hairstyles or colors deemed distracting, disruptive, or unsafe (head and facial) are not allowed. No bare feet, house shoes, slippers, or “heelies.” No chains on clothing or wallets or as necklaces. No exposed undergarments No trench coats or dusters. All coats and jackets must be able to open from the front. No hats, caps, bandanas, hairnets, skull caps or hoods. No sunglasses (unless prescribed by a physician) Writing on body in not allowed. No tattoos with provocative, profane, or offensive pictures or writing.

Dress Code ⦿ The MISD Dress Code will be strictly enforced. ⦿ A t-shirt and sweatpants will be provided by the office until a change of clothes can be brought to school. ⦿ Frequent infractions will result in an Office Referral. ⦿ Hats will be confiscated and returned at the end of the day.

3rd Period

Hallway Procedures ⦿ ⦿ ⦿ ⦿ ⦿ ⦿ ⦿

Keep the hallways clean – if you see trash on the floor – pick it up! Walk on the right side of the hall. No congregating in the middle of the halls. No horseplay, be aware and courteous of others. If you are in the hallways during classes, you must have a hall pass signed by a teacher. No cell phones, personal devices, earbuds or earphones are permitted at any time. You will be issued only 4 Grace Passes a Nine Weeks. These are for emergencies. Using the restroom should be taken care of BEFORE you enter the classroom – you have 4 minutes in the passing period.

3rd Period

Cell Phone Policy ⦿ Cell phones and/or personal devices are not permitted to be used or be visible during instructional time—in class or in the hallway. ⦿ There will be NO cell phones at lunch. › Friday - students can earn devices during lunch approved by administration. ⦿ The only time you can have your phone out is before school or after school. ⦿ In class, in the hallways, and at lunch phones must be OFF and OUT OF SIGHT!

Cell Phone Policy ⦿

If a teacher sees or hears a device, it is a violation. (No you cannot have them sticking out of your pocket.) ⦿ The phone will be taken up immediately and turned into the office.

1st Incident – phone taken up and turned into office for student pick-up at end of day. Lunch detention issued. ⦿ 2nd Incident - phone taken up and turned into office. Parents notified and they must pick-up at end of day. Lunch detention issued. ⦿ 3rd Incident - phone taken up and turned into office. Parents notified and they must pick-up at end of day. 1 day ISS or FNL. ⦿ 4th Incident - phone taken up and turned into office. Parents notified and they must pick-up at end of day. 1 day ISS or FNL. Student required turn in phone prior to school and may pick up after school for remainder of school year.

3rd Period

What about my music? ⦿

Too bad, so sad…. ⦿ Teachers may play music for the whole class, but students are not allowed to use individual electronic devices to listen to music in class or during passing periods. ⦿ Earbuds and headphones will be treated like cell phones. If they are seen, they will be taken to the office.

Home Room – 3rd ⦿ Students are expected to stand and recite the pledges and remain silent during the moment of silence. ⦿ Students are expected to remain silent during the morning announcements – it is up to YOU to listen to information. ⦿ Students are NOT allowed to eat in any classrooms throughout the day except during announcements (or first 15 minutes) in 3rd period. ⦿ No drinks except for bottled water in a clear or see-through container.

3rd Period

Eating in the Classroom ⦿

Students are not allowed to eat in the classrooms. The only time that snacks are allowed is during the first 15 minutes of 3rd period.

Students must go to the cafeteria during lunchtime. Students do not visit, tutor, or have lunch in teacher’s rooms.

Tardy Procedure ⦿

Students who are not in the classroom actively engaged in learning when the bell rings are considered tardy. ⦿ Students are assigned a lunch detention for every tardy, which must be served on the day the tardy is earned or the next day. ⦿ Four lunch detentions in a grading cycle = Friday Night Lights or ISS

Tardy Procedure ⦿

Students who are tardy to first period MUST check in at the front office. Students will not be admitted to class without an office pass. ⦿ Students who come late from another teacher’s class may be locked out of building because you are tardy. You would then need to walk around to the front of the school and check into the office for a tardy slip & possibly a badge.

A Hall - If you are in the A (English) hall during 5th period, you will go outside by the art room and enter the cafeteria from the back doors.

4th Period

Lunch ⦿

Cell phones/personal devices may NOT be used during lunch. Lunch is device free! ⦿ If students remain orderly, maintain a reasonable volume, and clean up adequately during the week, the principals may allow phones/personal devices during Friday lunches. ⦿ Students should use the restroom and get their drinks IN the lunchroom BEFORE heading back to class.

Lunch Detention ⦿

Students are responsible for attending lunch detention. Your teacher will let you know the date. ⦿ If the teachers on duty have to remind you, you may serve another detention. ⦿ Check in with the lunchroom Administrator if you have a lunch detention. ⦿ Please use the restroom and get a final drink BEFORE heading back to class.

5th Period

Academic Practices ⦿ Grades › 50% daily and quiz › 50% tests ⦿ Tests will be announced well in advance. So if you are sick a day or two before a test, you still need to be prepared to take that test the day you come back. Major projects follow the same rules. ⦿ You will be given a planner and are expected to record your assignments.

Academic Practices ⦿ Corrections › Students may make corrections on any

assignment (Test or Daily) within 1 week of the assignment being returned for a grade up to 100%. ⦿

Academic Honesty › If you are caught cheating, you will have an automatic office Referral. Your teacher will call your parents, and an administrator will issue a FNL for you to redo the assignment, quiz, or test on your own for a grade only up to a 70.

5th Period

Absences ⦿

Students are responsible for getting all information from their absences including assignments, handouts, etc. ⦿ Students need to make arrangements to see their teachers before or after school. Class time is not the appropriate time. ⦿ Students have the same number of days they were absent to complete and turn in missing work.

Grace Passes / Hall Passes ⦿

Students should be in their classrooms learning at all times, not out in the hallways. ⦿ 4 Grace Passes per nine weeks. These are for emergency visits to the bathroom or your locker. Use them wisely. ⦿ Hall passes. You must have a hall pass to go to the bathroom, office/nurse, or library. You need teacher permission to go to these places during class time.

The office will not call you out of class unless it is an urgent matter. ⦿ If you forget something at home or your parent brings you lunch, you will be able to retrieve it during your lunch in the cafeteria at the administrator table. ⦿ The office will not disrupt class to have students come get homework or projects they forgot at home. Either turn it in after lunch or the next day. Be responsible!

Work Recovery ⦿

A student who fails to turn in an assignment on time will be assigned Work Recovery by the teacher and have two school days to get it turned in for full credit. ⦿ Students will receive 6 Work Recovery Passes per 9 weeks grading cycle. ⦿ Example: Johnny doesn’t turn in his assignment to Mrs. Jones on Monday. He has Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning, Tuesday afternoon, and Wednesday morning before school to get it done. It is due to Mrs. Jones during class on

Work Recovery Q&A ⦿ Where is work recovery? › Mornings—cafeteria › Afternoons— 12C Hall ⦿ How do I know if I have work recovery? › You didn’t complete your assignment, your teacher will notify you, you will have a WR pass to use, your name goes on the board under Work Recovery. ⦿ What if I don’t want to go to work recovery? › You lost that option when you didn’t turn in your assignment › You will either attend a work recovery or a FNL

Work Recovery Q&A ⦿

What happens if I don’t go to work recovery or I run out of WR passes? › If you don’t show up to work recovery within

the two day time limit, you will receive a “0” and be assigned a Friday Night Lights (FNL). › Parents will be notified when a FNL is assigned. › The FNL is the last opportunity to get rid of the “0” in gradebook. When you complete assignment, you can receive up to a “70”.

Students, just do your work. We want you to learn, and you can’t learn if you don’t do your work.

Tutoring ⦿

We want everyone to be successful, so we offer tutoring before and after school. ⦿ Sometimes teachers have meetings in the mornings, so make an appointment with your teacher. ⦿ Each department has the tutoring schedule posted outside each teacher’s door as well as on our website.

7th Period

The dismissal bell rings at 4:10. ⦿ Students will be released to one of 4 areas: › › › ›

Departure Bus Students ⦿

Go to the cafeteria to wait. ⦿ Sit with your bus group. ⦿ Do not roam the hallways and miss your bus. ⦿ Horse play is absolutely not allowed in the bus waiting area.

Departure Parent Pick-Up Walking Home ⦿

8th Period

Report to the area in front of the school where a staff member will be on duty. ⦿ Students that are walking home will meet at the crosswalk / bike racks where a staff member will be on duty. ⦿ Students are only allowed to exit through the front doors if they are a car rider or walker. Students who exit to walk home through the back or side doors will receive a detention. This is a safety issue.

8th Period

Acknowledgement Form ⦿

All students will be required to sign form provided by their 8th period teacher stating that they understand and will make every effort to abide to the expectations of Melissa Middle School. Not adhering to these standards could result in disciplinary measures.
