Welcome to the Skye Festival Welcome to the 2018 Skye Festival - Fèis an Eilein - an annual celebration of island culture and performing arts. This year we celebrate 27 years since the Festival was started. The Festival is organised by SEALL - Skye Events for All - one of Scotland’s leading rural touring promoters and is one of the best small-venue festivals in Scotland. This year’s festival offers a programme of over 30 events, with some of the top names in Scottish traditional music, a week of Jazz with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, a visit from Scotland’s premiere string orchestra, and some great Gilbert and Sullivan. We also work with the community of Sleat who provide charity cafés, house parties, cèilidhs, exhibitions and environmental days. Duncan MacInnes, Creative Director, SEALL

ALAN BISSETT PRESENTS THE MOIRA MONOLOGUES

Meet Moira Bell, cleaner, single mother and the hardest woman in Falkirk. Whether defending her wee dog Pepe from the local rottweiler, attempting to seduce a teacher, or belting out Diana Ross for the Scotia karaoke night, Moira is hilarious, hypnotic, frightening and heart-warming company. Based on the stories and characters Alan encountered growing up in the Hallglen area of Falkirk, where The Moira Monologues first premiered, Moira and her pals have left audiences all over the country weak with laughter. “This is brilliant stuff, an exhilaratingly fresh take on the whole business of class and culture in Scotland.” The Scotsman “Moira Bell is a legend. A hilarious, but subtly smart work that takes society slowly apart” The Skinny “A funny, feisty, fiery 60 minutes that’s utterly convincing.” TV Bomb

Inner Sound present the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta

Inner Sound are delighted to be back at SMO again performing one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most popular operas. The Pirates of Penzance centres around Frederic, who, having reached his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of a Major-General, and they fall in love. Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born on the 29th of February and so,

technically, he is only four. His indenture specifies that he remain apprenticed to the pirates until his “twenty-first birthday”, meaning that he must serve another 63 years, bound by his own sense of duty. Inner Sound is one of Scotland’s leading amateur G and S production companies. Anne Lampard MBE has for years been training generations of singers, some of whom now work in the professional operatic circuit.

Anne Lederman and Capucie Onn

The storytelling/fiddle performance of a journey from present to past, through the cultures, Native and Euro-Canadian, that permeate and intertwine on the Canadian prairies. Through one woman's eyes, it is the story of a music and of the people who created it, and who, against all odds, continue to play it. The music is like no other, embodying aspects of Ojibwa, Cree, Scottish, French, English, American and eastern European traditions, a uniquely Canadian music played on a small box with four strings. Manitoba-born Anne Lederman is a fiddler, singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, researcher, teacher and 'national treasure'. She is joined by actor and musician Capucie Onn, playing the young Anne.

This summer NYOS Jazz Orchestra presents a profusion of cool jazz in a two-part concert. We celebrate the music of Joe Zawinul’s groundbreaking group Weather Report. The 1970s were one of the most exciting periods in jazz, and after the emergence of rock and roll, the inevitable fusion of jazz and rock came of age. Never more so than in the music of Weather Report, blending grooves and improvisation, through-composed melodies and evolving ensemble textures. The Jazz Orchestra is then joined by beatboxer, sound artist and vocal sculptor Jason Singh. Director of Jazz at NYOS Malcolm Edmonstone has worked closely with Jason to select aspects of his extensive creative projects, and arranged these for the orchestra and vocalists. Buy tickets for both concerts and get £2 off.

Award-winning documentary about life on the Faroe Islands In their remote home in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islanders have always eaten what nature could provide, proud to put local food on the table. The land yields little, so they have always relied on harvesting their seas. Hunting whales and seabirds kept them alive for generations, and gave them the way of life they love; a life they would pass on to their children. But today they face a grave threat to this tradition. Mike Day’s award-winning documentary, The Islands and the Whales, has garnered a string of international festival awards including DOC NYC Grand Jury Prize, Hotdocs Emerging International Filmmaker Award and a Bafta nomination.

Sunrise vocal performance with locally-sourced breakfast ATLAS Arts has been working with Caroline Bergvall since 2016 on Ragadawn. In collaboration with Gaelic speakers on the island, Bergvall has devised a powerful and entrancing piece, interweaving music, text, and voices, which will be performed between dawn and sunrise. The Sound of Sleat and the Knoydart Peninsula will provide a spectacular backdrop for Ragadawn (Isle of Skye 57.5 ° N), which melds nature and song together. It is a multi-sensory composition for two voices (spoken and sung) incorporating multiple languages - including Gaelic - and electronic frequencies to accompany and celebrate the rising of day.

An earlier incarnation was performed in 2016 at the Festival de la Batie (Geneva) and the Estuary Festival (Southend), garnering great reviews. The performance begins at 5.14am and is 55 minutes long. Following the performance, there will be a communal breakfast. For this ATLAS is collaborating with local suppliers to create a unique menu that is offered as part of the Ragadawn project. A free event but reservation is essential BOOK: atlasarts.org.uk For questions about the event or accessibility contact: [email protected] 01478 611143
