The chemistry of fire and fire suppression ABSTRACT: Combustion is the rapid exothermic oxidation of a material resulting in heat, light and various combustion products such as carbon dioxide and water vapour. Once we understand that it is a chemical reaction, we can look at ways to suppress fire. This talk is aimed at explaining a chemist's view of fire and flammability, as well as the chemistry used to suppress fire. Some real-life examples will be given.
