Grade Weekly Newsletter January 7 – January 11 Math What is Happening

Unit 4: Subtract 2-digit Numbers - Using manipulatives and drawings to subtract 2-digit numbers - Counting and drawing money using dollars and quarters

Math Tip: Playing Board Games An easy way to sneak in math skills is by playing classic board games and card games. My family’s favorites are Uno and Yahtzee. A favorite of mine growing up was Rummy tournaments. Any games that require students to add up scores is great for 2-digit addition review.

Literacy Tip: Reading over the break Students have been working hard on practicing reading strategies and setting goals. We discussed the importance of reading over the break, so they don’t lose what they have worked so hard to gain. Please set aside time each day for your child to read. A mere 20 minutes a day will do wonders.

Thank you for the great attendance and support at the Christmas program. So wonderful to see everyone at such a joyous time. I am proud of how well 2nd graders performed. I hope you enjoyed your gift that your child made (I won’t say what it is because some of you are waiting until Christmas to open it). Mr. Segula and I are very pleased with the end product. Many students are struggling with counting quarters. They have dimes, nickels, and pennies down. Those quarters are tricky! I told them they just need to learn the value of 1, 2, and 3 quarters – memorize it – so they can easily count on. We will be doing a bit of money intervention after break. We are seeing an increased level of awareness with students’ phonics skills. Students are thinking about letter sounds when they read more than they have before. It is transferring into their writing, as well.
