2010 – An Exceptional Year of Service

1

Angel Flight West’s 26th full year of service was just that, a full year of service–exceptional service. Not only did the organization fulfill its core mission, but through the generosity of Alaska Airlines, AFW went above and beyond. In 2010, more than 580 missions (and more than 620 to date) were arranged for relief personnel to travel to and from Haiti. No small accomplishment when you consider the work our mission coordinators do to put these flights in place. 2010 was the year we produced our very successful 60second public service announcement Never Far Away. A copy is included with this Annual Report. If you haven’t seen it, please take a minute to have a look. Then, tell anyone and everyone you know to see it, too. It’s available on our website. 2010 was the year Angel Flight West received a fourstar rating from Charity Navigator. If you aren’t familiar with Charity Navigator, it is the respected website that evaluates nonprofits so potential donors can learn about the charities they are considering supporting. See page 2 to read the letter.

This Annual Report not only highlights 2010, but also brings well-deserved attention to the Angel Flight West Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to support the organization in perpetuity. We have further to go to realize this mission, but the Foundation has already proven itself by being a resource to the organization during these difficult economic times. The forward-thinking Boards of both the organization and the Foundation have provided the means so that we can continue to be “never far away.” The positive impact we continue to have on the lives of many is the result. It is a distinct privilege to serve as Angel Flight West’s Executive Director. I hope you find this Annual Report informative. Don’t hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and questions. We plan to be never far away for years to come.

Alan M. Dias Executive Director, AFW, Inc.

Angel Flight West Annual Report 2010

Message from the Executive Director

Four-Star Rating with Charity Navigator - A 2010 Milestone Charity Navigator has become the nation’s largest and most utilized evaluator of charities. Its rating system examines two broad areas of a charity’s financial health– how responsibly it functions day to day as well as how well positioned it is to sustain its programs over time. Each charity is then awarded an overall rating, ranging from zero to four stars. Angel Flight West was awarded Charity Navigator’s coveted fourstar rating for sound fiscal management. This award not only reflects all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to follow best practices for fiscal policies, but also that every dollar donated is wisely spent at AFW.

Message from the Chairman of the Board

We think that arranging flights will increase under national health care and our expanding geographical reach. We are receiving more requests for specialized missions and camps. Our need for pilots to fly longer missions, secure funding to keep office operations running, and assure the viability of our programs are ongoing. Through local Community Service Councils you can help. Our volunteer Adopt-a-Hospital program has given us insights into growing passenger needs. Wing Leaders and Mission Orientation Pilots are continually welcoming new Command Pilots. We are truly indebted to our active Command Pilots donating their time, funds and airplanes to give us possibly the most efficient operation in the nonprofit aviation world.

I join Executive Director Alan Dias and Foundation Chair Stephen Bobko-Hillenaar in asking you to consider a longterm or legacy gift so that AFW’s work may continue for generations to come. Given our geographic reach, from the Canadian border to the Mexican border; from the Pacific Ocean east–nearly a thousand miles–we seek enthusiastic board members who can enhance our mission by representing their geographic areas and helping us reach new members and patrons. If you or someone you know might be interested in serving as a Director, please let us know! Enormous thanks to our airline partner, Alaska Airlines and Bill Ayer, Chairman & CEO of Alaska Airlines, and Chairman, President & CEO of Alaska Air Group, who also serves on our board. By helping us link the state of Alaska with the lower 48, through donating hundreds of disaster relief flights, and with direct financial contributions, Alaska Airlines has proven to be the very best corporate citizen and partner. It is said that: “He, who saves a single life, saves the world.” This prophetic admonition reminds us of our mission and our impact. Steve Danz Chair, AFW Board of Directors

Angel Flight West Annual Report 2010

This 2010 report salutes a diverse group of shareholders: Staff, Command Pilots, Wing Leaders, Earth Angels, ground volunteers, board members, patrons and providers. Each time a passenger gets to or from their appointment we have helped them to travel with dignity, lessening the burden of their challenges.

Adopt-a-Hospital - A 2010 Milestone The Adopt-a-Hospital outreach program is designed to help increase the number of flights arranged by Angel Flight West by making sure the right people know about the service we provide. Outreach volunteers “adopt” a hospital and visit it once a quarter to share Angel Flight West information with key hospital personnel. Outreach volunteers who commit to adopting a hospital for one year (four visits) are provided with business cards, an AFW logo shirt, and other materials to be used in outreach meetings.

Above: Pilot Rob Breitbarth, CO Wing Leader, and originator of the Adopta-Hospital program, with his “mission assistant” Maggie on a visit to a hospital in eastern CO. Rob says, “Maggie stays in the airport car while I meet with the hospital staff about AFW. We have visited most of the Eastern CO critical care hospitals.”

Above: Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford in No. CA is just one of the many hospitals AFW services.

The challenge we face today is tomorrow. Our success means that we are a crucial resource for healthcare facilities and others needing our service throughout the West. Monies committed to AFW Foundation can be invested and left untouched in perpetuity. The goal of the Foundation from the beginning was to gain the financial strength to keep and expand our existing commitments, as well as to pursue new initiatives that fulfill our promise to the people we serve. In addition, this helps to free financial support of our patrons for other nonprofit organizations.

Aloha to our Angel Flight West Foundation patrons and future patrons. 5

Thank you for your past and future support of the Foundation. Thank you to those who have added to the Foundation in 2010 allowing us to continue to fulfill our mission. The Angel Flight West Foundation’s mission is to provide long-term financial support enabling Angel Flight West to arrange free air transportation for those in need. Due to the economic events of the last few years, 2010 was a year which all nonprofits found challenging to raise funds to meet operating

budgets. Due to the foresight of AFW’s Board, the Foundation was formed and has assisted Angel Flight West in this difficult environment. The Foundation was able to provide financial support to Angel Flight West allowing staff to concentrate on arranging thousands of missions for those in need. This would not have been possible without the generous contributions of those who have given to the Foundation in the past. The core of Angel Flight West are passengers, providers, pilots and patrons. We exist to arrange flights for passengers initiated by providers and flown by our volunteer pilots; all made possible by the generosity of our patrons. Some of our patrons have given to fund the “now” of Angel Flight

Message from the Chairman of the Foundation Board

West; there are those that have given to fund the “forever” by donating to the Foundation; and then there are those who have given to both. It is difficult to see what the future has to offer. However, we know that by having a strong Foundation, Angel Flight West will continue to grow and serve more people in need. This has been seen by the expansion into new regions and coordination of flights for those in special disaster situations like Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Haiti, and more recently the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. In the years to come, the Foundation Board will continue building the asset base to provide long-term financial support to Angel Flight West. Currently the assets in the Foundation are relatively small, but by growing the Foundation we will be able to provide meaningful support to Angel Flight West. By doing so, we will enable staff to arrange more free missions to serve those in need. Thank you to all of those who have given to the Foundation. If you have not done so, and are interested in learning more about this unique organization and how your support of Angel Flight

West is a wise investment of your philanthropic dollars, please contact me. By making a “forever” commitment to the Foundation in the form of a current gift or a legacy gift your generosity can go on giving for years to come. As I’ve said, the mission of the Foundation is simple: to ensure there is financial support for Angel Flight West through good and bad times well into the future. Please join me in supporting the Foundation and cementing our commitment to serving those in need. Mahalo & Aloha, Stephen Bobko-Hillenaar Chair, AFW Foundation Pilot & AFW Board member Dr. Hunter Handsfield, WA Wing, loading donated blood from the Puget Sound Blood Center–the blood service operator for virtually all of WA west of the Cascades. After blood drives in smaller WA communities, AFW often transports donations to Seattle for processing and eventual distribution.

The purpose of a Community Service Council (CSC) in a Wing is to serve Angel Flight West by expanding fund development, outreach for pilots and passengers, and to generate publicity in a relatively small geographic area. Primarily, a CSC provides an organized manner in which to pursue the development of a comprehensive donation process at the community level. As Angel Flight West grows it is important to maintain our grassroots. The CSC is one way AFW both reaches out and stays in touch at the local level.

OR Wing pilot Derrick Teal flew Sgt. Chris Hopkins and his wife Christina home to Sacramento, CA, following Sgt. Hopkins third deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Wounded Warriors - A 2010 Highlight Through the efforts of our volunteer pilots and commercial airline partners, AFW helps to see that American heroes in need of critical medical care and/or access to special programs can get to where they need to be. AFW is committed to supporting other nonprofits such as the Wounded Warrior Project. We are honored to assist these heroes and their families, and we welcome the opportunity to partner with other nonprofits contributing to similar missions. We would like to recognize and express a special thanks to our members who are presently serving in our military forces.

Camps - A 2010 Highlight

Angel Flight West Annual Report 2010

As part of its commitment to supporting special needs camps, AFW pilots volunteer their time to fly children, parents and counselors to camps for burn survivors, cancer patients, the hearing or sight-impaired, and more. Many of these children face significant obstacles in getting to camp. Their families may live a long way from a commercial airport, or have limited financial resources because of medical issues. For many of these kids, it’s their one week a year where they can be among others facing similar challenges, and build their self-esteem.

Haitian Relief - A 2010 Highlight Angel Flight West is proud to have partnered with Alaska Airlines in helping provide assistance to the people of Haiti following the destructive earthquake. Alaska Airlines donated millions of miles and $10,000 to AFW for use in transporting relief workers and those needing to get out of Haiti. Our many thanks to Alaska Airlines for not only its generous donation of 14 million miles into our mileage account to help provide flights for relief teams and/or families needing to get loved ones out of Haiti, but for their financial support in assisting with the necessary fees and taxes for booking mileage flights. AFW was able to assist hundreds of people, either in teams of medical personnel, aid workers going to Haiti for six months or in two cases, to bring adoptive children who have been waiting for years and were brought home because of this tragedy. You can donate miles by going to www.angelflightwest.org and clicking on Donate Alaska Airlines Miles at the bottom right.

Seven-year-old Jaime is one of our long time passengers. He flies between Carlsbad, CA, and Santa Monica, CA, for follow-up appointments at UCLA Medical Center after having a small bowel transplant due to kidney disease. The family has little income for transportation to Jaime’s ongoing medical appointments.

Angel Flight West 2010 Statistics ✈ Our pilots donate their time, talent, airplane, fuel and operating expenses which, in 2010, totaled $2,900,519. ✈ Angel Flight West arranged 6,717 flights for nearly 2,000 passengers on 4,273 missions flown, for a total of over 1,100,000 nautical miles. (In 1984, its first year of operation, Angel Flight West flew only 15 missions.) ✈ Alaska Airlines not only donated 600 tickets to help AFW transport passengers throughout the U.S., but also features AFW as one of a few select charitable organizations to receive passenger donated mileage program miles. You can donate miles by going to www.angelflightwest.org and clicking on Donate Alaska Airlines Miles at the bottom right. 27

✈ Angel Flight West received $971,385 in donated commercial airline tickets. ✈ With almost 1,600 active members, Angel Flight West is one of the largest volunteer pilot organizations in the U.S. ✈ Approximately 30% of our missions are for children and 70% are for adults with a variety of different illnesses and urgent needs. ✈ On average, an Angel Flight West mission takes off somewhere in the 13 Western states every daylight hour. ✈ Each dollar donated generates two to three dollars worth of contributed services by Angel Flight West volunteers.
