Welcome Letter Dear APSE Friends, It’s hard to believe our 21st annual conference is almost here! This year we will be in Atlanta where Georgia APSE has welcomed us with their southern charm. Our conference theme, Employment First: Not Just a Slogan, is what this conference is all about—moving our field beyond words into action. You will not want to miss our 2nd APSE Community Conversation and hear what “bold moves” people made since last year’s conference toward Employment First. Other highlights of this year’s conference include internationally known keynote speakers Kyle Maynard & Cary Griffin, along with Assistant Secretary for the Office of Disability Employment Policy, Kathleen Martinez. Based on feedback last year, we have included many more discussion sessions and networking opportunities for participants. In addition, on June 9th, we will have a fabulous Awards Luncheon hosted by Georgia APSE. This will surely be a spectacular event honoring the over fifty nominees and award winners, including the work of Dr. Michael McAllister whose life was cut short in October 2009 . This year we are spotlighting two areas —Social Security Ticket to Work and Work Incentives and Mental Health & Employment. Other breakout sessions will focus on state of the art innovative practices in job development, job support, transition, public policy, leadership and Employment First. In addition, there will be a self-advocates’ conference orientation and meet & greet on the first day along with a community conversation focused on issues facing self advocates and employment. This year’s Employer Leadership Forum will be a focus of the conference and will offer opportunities to hear from and network with employers from around the country. This is our time to move the Employment First agenda forward—it is not just a slogan, it is time for action! We invite you to join us in Atlanta for an exciting conference that is sure to engage everyone. Sincerely,

Laura Laura A. Owens Executive Director

APSE Keynote Speakers Opening Keynote - Community Conversation The winds of change are blowing our field in a new and exciting direction. Change requires meaningful conversations to help us understand what is happening, to learn from each other and to find ways to move forward using the insight and knowledge of those interested in the issues facing our field. As an organization, APSE is experiencing a renewed commitment to advancing employment for citizens with disabilities. We have begun to engage APSE Members in this commitment through Community Conversations focusing on three questions: What time is it?, What do you need to learn, re-learn or unlearn? and What is your next BOLD move? We hope you leave with a sense of renewal and urgency to pursue your next bold move!

Day 2 Keynote - Kyle Maynard, Motivational Speaker No Excuses! Kyle Maynard has a congenital defect that robbed him of arms from below the elbows and his legs from below the knees. But this hasn’t stopped him from becoming a winning high school wrestler, weightlifter, gifted student – and example to everyone who meets him. In this moving and eloquent presentation full of examples from his life, Maynard outlines how his "No Excuses" philosophy helps him meet the numerous challenges that confront him daily, showing audiences how they too can overcome the great challenges in their own lives – and succeed.

Closing Keynote - Cary Griffin, Griffin-Hammis Associates, LLC & The Center for Social Capital, Inc. Employment First: Social Capital & Our New Roles The national conversation about Employment First that APSE is leading is revitalizing policy and practice. Some worry that customized community employment will be too expensive and difficult for everyone, even though we already managed to erect a parallel system of some 5,000 sheltered programs, our own transit systems, and housing that mimics but often precludes real life in our communities. This session uses humor, national examples, and strong evidence to illuminate: critical economic leverage points for success; the unlimited ways to make a living in this world, new skills we each need for customizing employment; augmenting self-advocacy & family power; how Bridging & Bonding Social Capital help make sheltered/segregated work models irrelevant; why running parallel systems is too expensive and unproductive to continue; that hiring someone remains both a personal and an economic decision for employers; and why fear keeps us running the same old, expensive programs.

Closing Keynote - Kathleen Martinez, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Disability Employment Kathleen Martinez was nominated by President Barack Obama to be the third Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 25, 2009. As head of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), Ms. Martinez advises the Secretary of Labor and works with all DOL agencies to lead a comprehensive and coordinated national policy regarding the employment of people with disabilities. Blind since birth, Ms. Martinez comes to ODEP with a background as an internationally recognized disability rights leader specializing in employment, asset building, independent living, international development, diversity and gender issues.

Conference Features General Sessions Each day will start with a general session to entertain, motivate and energize us for the remainder of the day. We will open the conference on Tuesday with our Community Conversation-starting where we left off last year. We will hear what bold moves were accomplished and how we can continue to move forward toward Employment First. Kyle Maynard will inform and inspire us with his No Excuses! motivational presentation at the general session on Wednesday. Thursday, we will begin the day with APSE’s President and Board meeting with the membership over breakfast to discuss current and future APSE initiatives. The breakfast meeting will be followed by Keynote Speakers, Cary Griffin and Kathleen Martinez, who will challenge us to rethink our role in this era of Employment First!

Other Conference Features Exhibits and Exhibitors’ Reception Visit our exhibitors from across the country to check out the latest tools, products, and research for enhancing and expanding integrated employment. Relax on Tuesday evening, enjoy great food, a cash bar, and time to talk one-on-one with Exhibitors. Greet old friends and meet new before heading out for a night of fun in Hotlanta!
