The College of Education unit and its programs are accredited by the National Council on Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) through 2020. Beginning in 2020, The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) will replace NCATE. The accreditation review process for the College is on a 7‐year cycle with the next review to take place in 2020. The CAEP accreditation process as two primary components: educator preparation provider (EPP) review and the program review. The EPP is the school, college or department of education, plus any other entities on campus that prepare personnel to work in school—the organization with the responsibility for managing or coordinating all programs offered for the initial and continuing preparation of teachers and other school personnel, regardless of where these programs are administratively housed. The EPP is reviewed by an CAPE Board of Examiners team that completes a site visit and evaluates the EPP against the five CAEP standards. The Educator Preparation Section of the Georgia PSC uses the mechanism of state approval to fulfill its responsibilities for teacher preparation in Georgia. State approval recognizes universities, colleges and other entities that prepare education personnel to recommend for certification candidates who successfully complete state approved preparation programs. GaPSC state approval assures the EEP, its candidates, and the public that candidates who complete approved programs are qualified as education personnel for P‐12 schools. The University of Georgia is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award baccalaureate, masters, specialist and doctoral degrees.
