WHY U.A.E ? Variety
• The emirate will spend $7bn on the direct infrastructure it needs for Expo 2020 and it is likely to create around 277,000 jobs between now and 2021, when the six-month exhibition finishes.
People to people Netizens, virtual communities, social networks, web logs...
• It means more people would be coming to Dubai to live and work, more visas being processed, more companies bidding for work or supplying services and as this business activity increases, quietly in the background, it means data. Lots of data.
People to machine Archives, medical devices, digital tv, e-commerce, smart cards, bank cards, computers, mobiles...
• Data on spending, on new residents, on schemes to prepare for the Expo, on the utility needs this sudden growth creates and so on. For the IT industry, the surge in the data that companies want to analyse means more demand for software, hardware and services.
Machine to machine Sensors, gps devices, bar code scanners, surveillance cameras, scientific research...
Velocity 2.9 MILLION Emails sent every second 20 HOURS Of video uploaded every minute 50 MILLION Tweets per day
• The wider UAE recovered pretty quickly from the economic downturn. It kept spending on big infrastructure schemes and benefited economically from some of the tragedy happening elsewhere in the Arab world, as people fled conflict to set up home here. So, in big data terms, technology companies were already highlighting the UAE as among the fastest growing in the region. • Analyst firm IDC recently predicted that investment in business analytics in the Middle East is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of more than 20 percent over the next five years. Just over 40 percent of CIOs in the Middle East, it said, are considering investments in analytics and big data technologies. • The UAE, it added,“...has been at the forefront of business analytics and big data adoption across the Middle East“.

OIL & GAS The upstream oil and gas industry‘s need to better understand subsurface has driven companies to collect LARGER volumes of data, more TYPES of data and collecting data on a more FREQUENT basis
The amount of SEISMIC DATA being collected and DATA FROM DRILLING AND LOGGING ACTIVITY has also grown due to the fact it is being measured in smaller increments
The amount of data being collected during production has GROWN due to downhole sensors relaying information to the surface on a real-time basis
The ability to COMMUNICATE FROM THE FIELD with head offices via mobile communications has added to the overall data volume
HIGHER DRILLING COSTS and THINNER RETURNS on exploration, particularly shale exploration, means companies are needing more data and better refined data to ensure the highest profitability of drilling success
The NEED TO GATHER more subsurface data and evolution of systems that could communicate with each other has allowed for INTEGRATION OF DATA
The industry has overcome the challenge of storing data, and is addressing the challenge of how to make data ACCESSIBLE to employees and using BIG DATA for a competitive business advantage.

DAY 2 | wednesday, 20th MAY 2015
WORKSHOPS
9:00 Data Analysis and Learning the use of (Intelligent) Agents Emerging data-driven analytical techniques in the Energy industry are becoming increasingly important to achieve operational excellence by providing tools that enhance decision-making and operational efficiency under changing conditions. These advanced techniques are agile, flexible, repeatable and systematic, with less reliance on either heavy simulators or ad-hoc approaches. This session describes applications of machine learning to Energy applications and benefits and limitations of different methods. Special attention will be paid to linking learning with real-time optimization of complex systems. This is also aimed to promote knowledge sharing with case studies on the production optimization and reliability, supply chain optimization, asset development planning and optimization, data visualization, and acquisition and treatment of big data. This is especially the case for informed decision-making under multisource uncertainties (e.g. Utilities failure, oil and gas prices) and an ever changing environment. Key highlights : • BigData: Distributed File System • Data Mining Vulnerability Assessment • Predictive Analysis Who will benefit : The intended audience of this workshop will be professionals who are responsible for data strategy, analytics, big data, technology and process, business intelligence, asset management, operations and customer analytics and engineers, researchers, operation staff, research operation staff, geo-scientists, consultants, and managers who are interested in the use, development and evolution of data analytics . The workshop hopes to attract a balanced mix of disciplines to enhance the exchange of information, ideas, and technologies.
12:00 Luncheon
13:00 Big Data Security and Privacy Security and privacy issue is critical for Big Data. Many works have been carried out focusing on business, application and information processing level from big data, such as data mining and analysis. However, security and privacy issues in Big Data are seldom mentioned to date. Due to its extraordinary scale, security and privacy in Big Data faces many challenges, such as efficient encryption and decryption algorithms, encrypted information retrieval, attribute based encryption, attacks on availability, reliability and integrity of Big Data. Key highlights : Topics of interests include : • Distributed data analysis platforms • Scalable solutions for pattern recognition • Stream processing and parallel batch processing technologies • Trusted platform implementation technologies for Big Data Analytics • Information quality/trustworthiness for Big Data • Provenance of content for Big Data • Visualizing large scale security data • Privacy in Big Data mining and analytics • Threat detection using Big Data analytics • High Performance and Efficient Data Cryptography
