2017 Professional Development Program to South Africa For Burroughs Wellcome Fund Scholars: Coordinated by Go Global NC and The Division of University and P-12 Partnerships, UNC System Principal’s Acknowledgment of Support The Burroughs Wellcome Fast Track Scholars program was created from a partnership between the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the University of North Carolina system, and four UNC system campuses. The goal of the partnership was to develop a “fast track” to teacher certification for science and mathematics majors and to provide financial support during a scholar’s junior and/or senior year, as well as an annual pay supplement for up to five years for scholars who became and remained employed as a public school teacher in North Carolina. As an added investment in the BWF Fast Track Scholar program, the BWF program provides support for BWF Scholars who have taught for at least two years to participate in a professional development international experience to gain a global perspective on education, to collaborate with other BWF Scholars as well as teachers in the host country, and most importantly, to improve and enrich their own teaching practice. Previous BWF-sponsored international experience trips have enabled BWF Scholars to travel to Singapore and India. This year, the destination is South Africa, where the itinerary will give BWF Scholars the opportunity to explore global challenges impacting education, like economic development, immigration, health care, biodiversity, and racial inequity – challenges with a clear, common link to North Carolina and the United States. We ask for your support for your teacher to participate in this powerful professional development experience. Please refer to the attached program information sheet for specific details about the program.
