Summarising Information
Memory & The Importance of Active Revision •
Its what we do with information that matters – or how we process it.
•
When we receive information, we can process it one of 3 ways: 1. 2. 3.
Visually – What the information looks like. Acoustically – What the information sounds like. Semantically – What the information means.
•
The deeper we process it the easier it will be to remember.
•
Any revision strategies that require deep processing (i.e. thinking about information in terms of meaning) will be most effective.
A Glove: GLOVE
SHALLOW – Visual Processing
MEDIUM – Acoustic Processing
DEEP – Semantic Processing
The deeper the processing the easier to remember…

When we learn something, the cells in our brain create new connections. Connections are weak at first and need to be strengthened through revision so that we can remember them. Not all revision strategies are effective at strengthening connections. Revision strategies which require us to think about information in terms of its meaning are the most effective. They are the most effective because thinking about information in terms of what it means makes us process information deeply. Deep processing makes it easier to remember information. Deep revision strategies include mind maps, past exam questions, flash cards etc.
