GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS GOVERNOR ISSUES EXECUTIVE ORDER HALTING TTF-FUNDED PROJECTS

Late last night, Gov. Chris Christie ordered state transportation officials to plan a shutdown of all ongoing work paid for by the nearly broke TTF. The Governor has apparently instructed the NJDOT and NJ Transit leadership to submit plans by the end of the day Saturday for an “immediate and orderly shutdown of all ongoing work.” According to his statement accompanying the executive order, “all state and municipal roadwork supported by the trust fund will halt, and can only resume if deemed essential for the protection of the health, safety and welfare of the public.” DOT Commissioner Rick Hammer estimated in April that the TTF would have about $85 million left at the end of June 2016, enough to keep construction projects going through early August. Christie's order prioritizes remaining money for essential projects, though federally funded projects could continue. The full text of Governor Christie’s Executive Order 210 is attached with this bulletin. ACCNJ will closely monitor this potentially volatile situation, and will be seeking to meet with NJDOT leadership and capital planning officials in the coming days.
