South Bethany Comprehensive Plan – Community Questionnaire 2011 List of Property Owners’ Comments For: Beach Services – Beach Cleaning
In this survey, responders were asked to provide written comments if they marked 2 or 3 ("Very Unsatisfied" or "Unsatisfied"). Although quite often positive comments and suggestions were provided, most of the written comments tended to be negative.
Comments – Beach Cleaning: TOTAL: 62 Comments/860 Returns (7.2%) After each completed survey was returned to the Town, each completed survey was given a number for record keeping purposes. The number before each comment represents that number.
326- Still too much trash on beach. 342- Seems like SBB is never cleaned. 314- All above OK. 312- Great to all! 278- Seldom go if ever, beautiful sight from top of dune! 258- Beach cleaning is poor. Guy drives around sparsely picking up things; doesn’t get out of his vehicle; misses garbage. 252- If SB had a non-smoking policy our beaches would be cleaner. 25- Should be on a maintenance schedule. 360 - Beaches are clean. 375- From time to time, the beach does seem to have a buildup of trash. We notice this as we are out with our metal detectors. Not sure of costs, but more frequent “sweeping” might help. 42- Very Spotty. 146- Additional cleaning should be considered. 152- Zamboni to rake and clean sand twice a week. 172- The beach is always skuzzy. 395- How about one of those machines that rakes the beach in the am? Especially Saturday and Sunday. There is a lot of small garbage not picked up i.e. cigarette butts, water bottle caps, etc.

423- Someone should clean the beaches better – Lifeguards before duty? 430- Didn’t know the beach was cleaned – often see trash on it and it would be nice if it could be “swept” occasionally to remove the beach straw and pieces of old snow fence which hurt your feet. 446- Could have used a beach rake to collect wood and other debris. 449- Needs to be cleaned more often. 470- Beach trash is often left behind. 480- Beach cleaning after storms could be improved. 502- Beaches and canals have debris such as paper and sticks etc. in them. 507- Dune bridge at south end of Seaside Drive needs to be kept uncovered by sand at steps bottom and free of splinters and cracked wood. 507- West side of beach at Seaside Drive (near street) needs very frequent sweeping of trash left by tides. 507- From time to time, the west half of the beach at Seaside Drive is extremely littered with trash left by high tides and often remains a long time. 532- Aside from emptying trash, what do they do? 552- Snow fence and remains were on the beach the entire summer of 2010 – cutting feet, etc. Very unsatisfactory. 556- Beach always has trash on it. 574- I don’t know cleaning schedule but same trash is on beach for 2 weeks at a time. 589- Terrible Job! Beach cleaning has been inadequate for 25 years. The town does a poor job in maintaining our most important asset!! 594- Sandpiper Beach was never clean in 2010. Staff riding the beach in their cart did little. Salary and fuel was a complete waste. Beach should be cleaned by a sweeper at least twice a year. 632- Believe could be better. 658- Beach access trash areas in summer need to be emptied more frequently. 702- The beach is not cleaned enough. 708- Better beach grooming and vending. 787- Beach on north end was NEVER cleaned last summer even with REQUESTS. Partying at beach at all hours! Cars and trucks are being used as storage units overnight beachside. 804- The beach should be cleaned several times each summer as it always was in the past with a mechanical beach cleaning machine. Last summer the beach was filthy. 825- Utilize motorized rakes to clean natural debris from beaches – machinery is at town hall and doesn’t get used. 829- The beaches need to be cleaned up on a regular basis. 832- Needs to be sifted or raked more often.
