10 SESSION LESSON PLAN (EXAMPLE) FOR JUNIORS/YOUNG PERSONS The plans are based around a one hour session and the current BJA Grading Syllabus up to and including 3rd Mon and are a guide to help coaches deliver a basic beginners course. All techniques demonstrated are to be done from a sleeve lapel grip (judo grip) and occasionally high collar and sleeve, with players always being encouraged to try the techniques both left and right. Times listed are approximate. Activities set out in the plan can be extended or reduced to suit your clubs needs. The basis around the sessions includes FUNdamentals, movement, agility, rules, technique, terminology and safety. Sessions are susceptible to change due to various factors: Age range Ability/disability of players Facilities Duration of sessions Pre and post venue activities Number of coaches or available adults helping with the group

The ukemi (breakfalls) and games aspects of the sessions are included as appendices 1 and 2.

T ECHNICAL D IRECTORATE APPENDIX 1 - UKEMI (BREAKFALLS) Individual The emphasis of safety should always be stressed, chin tucked into to chest, relax, slap the mat with the palm of the hand etc. Starting with players flat on their backs, steadily increasing to various stages until the standing position is achieved; this is to encourage confidence when falling. With Partners The emphasis of safety should still be stressed but by bringing in a partner (Uke), this will encourage confidence in both parties, stressing on posture, grips and safety. The items below can be used as a complete warm up: Individual 1) Lay flat on their backs; head tucked into chest, arms loosely folded across the chest, bang the mat with their hands. Alternately or both together. Stressing not to leave their hand on the mat, but bring back to start or bounce back up. This can be developed to a rolling action: As above, knees bent slightly and roll from side to side. Don’t over roll. 2) Sit up crossed legged, arms loosely folded and relaxed. Chin tucked in and roll backwards. Roll back and to for a few times to create movement. Bring in the breakfall. Hands to bang the mat at approx 45 degrees, stressing not to take arms beyond shoulder level and bring back to across body. 3) Crouched up into a small ball on your feet/toes. Head and Chin tucked in and roll, keeping in a ball shape for a few times, to start to build confidence with falling backwards. Bring in the breakfall with two hands, timing is important, not to wait until landed before hitting the mat. 4) Stand up, arms loosely folded, head/chin tucked in. Bend knees until comfortable, fall on bottom, roll back and breakfall with two hands. Important to stress do not put hands down to break the fall. 5) Lay on front, roll onto back, breakfall with single hand. Don’t over roll and repeat both sides. 6) Knees and elbows, place one hand under the chest, roll over arm which is taken away, breakfall with other hand, reverse back into elbows and knees position and alternate arms, repeat. 7) Press up position. As in 6. 8) Sit up, arms loosely folded, legs out stretched – together. Fall to the side, looking at their toes. Repeat a couple of times. When falling to the right use right hand to breakfall and point out that the hand should be pointing to the toes, approx 45degrees between head and feet. Alternate from side to side. Point out that the arm is not to come to shoulder level or land on elbow. 9) Sit up into a crouched position, right leg out, arms loosely folded; fall to right side and breakfall, allowing hand to bounce back up. Alternate between both sides. Tendency to land on elbows, over stretch of the shoulder or put their hands out. 10) Stand up, right foot stance, bend knees till comfortable, fall on side of bottom and breakfall: stressing all the points and not to fall onto back. Repeat both sides. 10 Session Lesson Plan (Example) for Juniors/Young Persons

B RITISH J UDO A SSOCIATION

T ECHNICAL D IRECTORATE 11) Kneel up tall, hands and arms to make an upside down ‘V’. Fall forward onto forearms and hands, protecting face, keeping stomach and chest off the floor. Emphasise the forearms and not hands that will break the fall. 12) Stand up, bend knees till confidence is achieved and fall onto forearms and toes only. Do not dive forward. Keep stomach and chest off the floor. 13) Forward Rolls, keeping head/chin tucked in and pushing off with the legs. 14) Kneel up tall; bring out right foot/leg to a 90 degree position. Place right hand on knee, left hand goes through under the right leg, followed by head, shoulders and body. Breakfall with right hand. Change sides. 15) When confident, continue onto full rolling breakfall. With Partners 1) Partner (Uke) on knees and elbows, tori kneels up beside, pushes and Uke rolls and breakfalls. Don’t over roll and forcefully push, point out working together. 2) Same position as in (1), Uke places hand furthest away under their stomach, tori takes hold of their sleeve with two hands, Uke gently rolls out and breakfalls. Tori keeps hold of sleeve. 3) Same position as in (1), tori now stands up, Uke places hand furthest away under their stomach, tori takes hold of their sleeve with two hands, bent knees, straight back, supports Uke. Tori gently pulls the arm/sleeve to allow Uke to roll out and breakfall. Change sides and turns. This can be the developed so the actions are done with speed. 4) Uke in press up position, then follow item (3) 5) Uke goes into elbows and knees position. Tori sits on their backs. Gently slides their bottom over the far side of Uke. When falling backwards reaffirm chin tucked in and not to break their fall with their hands first. Breakfall with two hands hitting the mat simultaneously. 6) Progression from 5. Uke goes on hands and knees. 7) Tori goes onto elbows and knees position. Uke kneels up tall at the side of Uke and places the arm furthest away from Tori’s head over Tori’s’ back. Tori wraps the arm (above the elbow joint) around their body ensuring tight control. Tori either: brings in their knee to create a space or straightens their leg out enabling tori to roll into Ushiro-kesa-gatame. Uke turns their head to prevent a head dive and then Uke can breakfall while rolling. Alternate from side to side creating a rhythm. Change over.

T ECHNICAL D IRECTORATE APPENDIX 2 –GAMES With all games they can be used as part of the warm up, reward, cool down or the end of any session as an atmosphere maker. Safety is paramount as with all aspects of Judo, but within games, control and rules are important. Terminology can also be brought into play, by using Hajime, Matte, Ne-waza, Tachi-waza. Asking the children questions of the terminology or of the safety rules to each game reinforces the safety and understanding. Stuck in the Mud - ‘Ne-waza’ Find a space (Space is safety), sit on bottom cross legged. One person is the ‘catcher’. They crawl on the hands and knees to catch people. Once caught, they sit on their bottoms cross legged until freed by others. To be freed, people who are not caught go and ‘tig’ them to free them back into the game. The catcher is not allowed to catch the same person until they have ‘tigged’ 5 other people. No one is allowed to stand up. Stay away from the edge/walls and do not bump into each other. Stuck in the Mud - ‘Tachi-waza’ Find a space. One person is the catcher. Once ‘tigged’ stand with legs wide apart until freed by others. To be freed, people who are not caught go through the legs. The catcher is not allowed to catch the same person until they have ‘tigged’ 5 other people. One way is to be set out to free the people caught, for e.g. from the front or from the back NOT both. When people are caught they are not to be used as a roundabout as people will be crawling through legs. Space is safety, if caught near the edge of the mat bring them further in to the centre of the mat and not to bump into each other. 1 and 2 game - Ne-waza Sit with partner down the centre of the mat, all in a line. One side are number 1’s and their partner’s number 2’s. When the coach shouts ‘1’, number 1’s turns around and crawls to the opposite side of the mat. Number 2’s are to stop them from getting there. Repeat with number ‘2’ If a technique is taught then the object would be for the catcher to turn their partner over into that technique. Another option is that the coach is to alternate between 1 and 2 without resetting to the starting position. This would reinforce the control and closeness required for Ne-waza. No one is allowed to stand up. Watch for spacing between the pairs in the set up of the game.

10 Session Lesson Plan (Example) for Juniors/Young Persons

B RITISH J UDO A SSOCIATION

T ECHNICAL D IRECTORATE Dead Ant 5 actions to be done as fast as they can. The object is not to be last or move when you’re not supposed to. Find a space. (1) on your backs, (2) on your fronts, (3) hands and knees ‘like a dog’, (4) on your backs – legs and hands in the air ‘dead ant’, (5) jump up as high as they can, clap their hands in the air and stay standing ‘catch a ball’ Process of elimination is used to determine the winner. Knot Belt Game Place the knot of the belt around their backs. Take a judo grip. The object of the game is to bring the knot back to the front of their partner. Rules: Only one hand is to come off, one hand to stay on partner for control. Limit the movement to 2 mats. Stay standing, no falling over. Push and Pull 2 lines down the centre of the mat. Pull: Take a right handed judo grip and stance. Pull to their side of the mat. Reinforce posture, whole body movement, no falling over. Change sides and stance. Push: Take a right handed judo grip and stance. Push their partner to the opposite side of the mat. Reinforce posture, whole body movement, no falling over. Change sides and stance. Once the actions have been practiced, alternate between push and pull actions, trying to unstable their partners. Change to Left side. Belt Game - Ne-waza Ne-waza game: pair off and kneel up at the edge of the judo mat on opposites sides. Number the pairs. Coach throws a knotted belt and calls out a number, the pair crawl as fast as they can to the belt and try to take it back to their starting position. No standing up allowed. Object of the game is to tackle their opponent and try and steal the belt and to engage in a ‘Tug of War’. Once contact has been made with the belt, begin to count 10 seconds. Award the point to the person nearest their side/position. Bulldog - Ne-waza 1 person is in the middle of the mat, and the rest of class at one end of the mat. The object of the game is to get to the other side of the mat on their hands and knees without getting caught. To get caught the catcher has to stop the person moving for a count of 3. No standing up. Once they are caught they become a catcher. Restart. Safety: Be aware of overcrowding on and individual.

T ECHNICAL D IRECTORATE Ladders Pair off. Players lay 1 mat in from the edge; face down with ½ metre between each person opposite their partner to form 2 teams. 1st person in the ‘ladder’ gets up and ‘tig’s the coach (who stands at the end of the mat, in line with the 1st pair), runs down the middle of the mat to the end, run up the ladder over the legs of the team, lay down back in their original place. 2nd person runs over the first person, tig’s the coach, runs down the centre and over the legs of the team, lay down in their original place, and so on. Safety points: make sure there is enough space between each rung of the ladder. The people acting as the ladder lay flat and keep their legs together and head down. First team back to the original starting position is the winner. 1, 2, 3, side game Players go to one side. Coach point to each side of the mat and gives a number (coach observes from side 4). When the number is called players run to the respective sides. Safety: not to dive for the side, push out of the way, trip anyone up. Object of the game is to eliminate players till the last person. Last one to reach the side is out, move when you’re not supposed to move, or fall over will eliminate out of the game. Variants to the game could be names of techniques, Japanese words, referee’s scores etc... Asteroids Players take a right handed grip with their partners. All huddle together in the centre of the mat, tight as they can. When Hajime is called, move around the mat, working together pushing and pulling all over the mat. Be aware not to bang into anyone, not to fall over and not to purposely bang into other players. This game is to encourage movement in all directions, no stiffness in the arms or body, no skipping, jumping, swinging partners around. Repeat for left handed grip. To advance the game, the coach can walk around/through, backwards/forwards etc around the mat to try and catch out players. Tug of War – using judo belts Ne-waza: Two lines down the centre of the mat, facing their partner (1metre away). One person takes off their belt. A variety of positions can be used: At no point does anyone stand up and no wrapping of the belt around the hands. 1) Partners facing each other, sitting down along the centre line. Right hand grip (left hand at bottom, right hand further up). Pull their partners to their side of the mat. Repeat to the left. 2) Lie on their fronts, again Right hand grip. Staying on their fronts, using their whole body, wriggle backwards to their side of the mat. Repeat to the left. Must stay on their fronts. 3) Lie on their backs, repeat actions as in (2). Must stay on their backs. 4) Place the folded belt, down the centre line. Players sit on the edge of the mat, cross legged facing the belt. On Hajime, players crawl to the belt and try to get back to their starting position.

T ECHNICAL D IRECTORATE 5) As in (4) but players face towards the outside of the mat, (backs to the centre of the mat and belts) Tachi-waza: Two lines down the centre of the mat, facing their partner (1metre away). One person takes off their belt. Important: Strongly stress not to let go, Good body position and whole body movement. 1) Take a right hand grip (left hand at the bottom, right hand further up) and stance. Pull partner to their side of the mat. Repeat to the left. 2) One hand only: Right hand grip and stance. Do not wrap belt around the hand. Pull partner to their side of the mat. Repeat to the left. 3) One person takes the two ends of the belt; the other takes a shoulder width hand grip of the belt (middle of the belt). Pull their partners to their side of the mat. Change belt grips with partner. Dodge Ball A small lightly inflated ball, foam or other material will be needed for this game: There are many variations of this game but each is to be monitored carefully for safety. 1) Players line up at the top of the mat, when Hajime is called they run to the opposite side as fast as they can. Coach throws the ball, aims below the hips to catch people out. When ‘out’ stand on the same side of the coach. Players may have turns in throwing the ball to get their team mates out. 2) 2 players (or coaches or more) are selected to be the ‘catchers’. Once they have the ball in their hands they cannot run or move. The other catcher can however move to a more suitable place the ball is then passed (thrown) to try and ‘tig’ them with the ball. Once players are caught, stand to one side of the mat. Ne-waza ‘Wrestling’ Pair up and sit back to back in a space. When Hajime is called the players start Ne-waza randori. The object is to try and achieve the upper or more dominant position. The coach says ‘Sono-mama’; the players then don’t move (freeze) and the coach picks the more dominant player.
