Paula Bleckmann, Germany A modern media education curriculum for Steiner Early Childhood training courses *SPECIAL WORKSHOP FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD TRAINERS GOING THROUGH THE FIRST AND SECOND AFTERNOON TIME* Language: English _________________________________________________________________________________ This workshops can only be booked by participants willing to participate in both workshop session times, at 2h30 PM and 4:45 PM, by participants willing to complete reading and self-reflection tasks (about 6 hours) before the workshop. The workshop is open primarily to multipliers (e.g. teaching staff in Steiner Waldorf initial teacher training and/or professional development). We will explore ways to prepare Early Childhood teachers for their work with children and even more importantly, with parents, so that these teachers feel empowered to pursue two important and sometimes seemingly conflicting goals: Preventing digital risks and in the long run laying the ground for a limited, active and creative use of digital media. The workshop gives an overview and in-depth examples from the media education curriculum being taught at Alanus University in the B.A. Waldorf Early Education. It covers practical aspects (drawing and cutting a cardboard theatre and/or flip book; playing the role of a media corporation marketing expert; practical examples from media education parent evenings - experiments on sensorimotor integration, inner vs. outer pictures, designing media agreements between families , and it also explores the theoretical background (effects of foreground and background screen media exposition; prevention of media risks; the Media Maturity Tower; risk and protective factors for digital addictions; parental media education habitus; helping children cope with and transform problematic media experiences; the role of child protection software; conflicts with national digital education regulations). All participants will receive a copy of the German training manual of 90 pages from the ECHT DABEI prevention program (www.echt-dabei.de), possibly also in an English translation (to be confirmed). As an optional addon, the evening time slots can be used for an exchange between interested workshop participants and Prof. Bleckmann. Additional ideas for a good media education practice in Steiner Waldorf Kindergartens and good teaching practice in the training centers are very welcome here. Prof. Bleckmann´s Ph.D. students in the research project “Media education in progressive education settings (Montessori, Steiner Waldorf, other independent schools)” will want to interview selected participants on their ideas and experiences in order to evaluate and further improve the teaching materials and methods (optional). _________________________________________________________________________________ Paula Bleckmann is is married and has three children.
