FAQ: Q. What is the purpose of the Content Engine? A. The Cisco Content Engine caches content (e.g. webpages, archived video broadcasts, etc.) at the remote site edge. It either receives the content from the Datacenter via a policy, "pushed" by the Content Distribution Manager; or it makes a request for new content from the Content Router. When users make a request for a cached web page, the request is redirected to the content engine. This happens via the WCCP protocol running on the router and the Content Engine. Q. What is the Content Router? A. The Cisco Content Router receives requests from Content Engines for new content. It decides which Content Delivery site is best able to deliver content to the local sites, and redirects the request accordingly. Q. What is the Content Switch? A. When the Datacenter receives a request for new content, it decides which server(s) in the same location will actually deliver the content. It is capable of load balancing server requests, and has session-level redundancy. Q. What is the Content Distribution Manager? A. The Cisco Content Distribution Manager is the central piece in the content delivery network. It performs actions such as: 1. deciding what content is replicated to which locations. 2. creates URL’s referencing content located on servers 3. captures usage and billing data 4. manages content network policies and device settings
