Expositional Preaching from the Authorized Version of the Holy Bible

2016 VISION: Faithful in little things!

Current Book: The Gospel According to Mark – Message 61

Scriptures for Today: Mark 13:1-11 – Tuesday (Jesus’ last days); Signs of the Second Coming Title of Today’s Message:

The End Times (Part 1) – Take heed lest any man deceive you!

INTRODUCTION Last week, we finished chapter 12 with WARNINGS about the hypocritical religious leaders and a life lesson from a poor WIDOW. Oh that we would trust God more than MONEY like that widow! Today, we will begin chapter 13 with a topic that appeals to many of us – the END times. There is perhaps no other topic in the Bible that captures the interest of so many people – both saved and lost – like prophecy. God has declared that His telling of events BEFORE they occur is one of the primary reasons why we should BELIEVE the Bible! Isaiah 48:5

I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.

PREACHING NOTES 1. As Jesus went out of the temple, He spoke a prophecy related to its DESTRUCTION.  1 of Jesus’ disciples remarked at how the outside of the temple was beautifully adorned. Luke 21:5 Matthew 23:27-28

NOTE

“And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts…” “Woe…for ye are like whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward…ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”

The disciple was probably Judas who often called Him “Master”. Pastors/churches are still enamored with making the church building a goodly spectacle to lure in people who would otherwise not come. In the NT, believers are “temples”– we should focus on building them!

 Jesus answered with a prophecy related to the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. 2 Chronicles 7:20,21 Luke 19:41-44

NOTE

“And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it…” “For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies…shall lay thee even with the ground”

Solomon’s glorious temple was destroyed. God helped Israel to rebuild it (Ezra). In less than 40 years (70 AD), what was before the disciples would be razed to the ground by the Roman general Titus. Prophetically, the temple will be rebuilt before the 2 nd Coming.

2. As Jesus sat upon the Mount of Olives, He spoke prophecies related to the SECOND coming.  Jesus revealed details of His Second Coming to those disciples closest to Him. Mark 5:37 Mark 4:34 Ezekiel 14:3

NOTE

“…save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James…” “…and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.” “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?”

We see this principle all through the Bible. If you come to Jesus with your own false ideas and doctrines (unwilling to humble yourself), He will not give you His truth. You will believe your own lie! However, if you come humbly seeking truth, He will gladly give it to you.

 Many false cults and false prophets take these verses out of their context – beware! 1 Corinthians 1:22 Matthew 24:3

NOTE

“For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:” “…and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?”

This is called the Olivet Discourse. It is important to get this context right as it affects the context for all the verses to come in chapter 13 (also Mt 24, Lk 21). Although the temple destruction was noted in verses 1 & 2, verse 3 begins a discussion on the Tribulation Period and the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible often refers to it as “those days.” Be careful, Jesus is speaking to His Jewish disciples about THE SIGN of His coming.

3. Jesus said “the BEGINNING of sorrows” brings liars, wars, earthquakes, famines and troubles!  “For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” John 7:24 2 Corinthians 11:3 2 Thessalonians 2:3 1 John 4:1 2 John 7 Revelation 12:9

NOTE

“Judge not according to the APPEARANCE…” “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty…” “Let no man deceive you by any means…” “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God” “This is a deceiver and an antichrist.” “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent…which deceiveth the whole world…”

The last days just before the return of our Lord Jesus Christ is said to be characterized by great deception. Most people in “Christianity” have no idea what Jesus said on this issue. We must TAKE HEED to ourselves, and hold fast to the holy Bible. It could happen to you!

 “Wars and rumors of wars…For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom” Matthew 24:6

NOTE

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars…for all these things must come to pass...”

The Encyclopedia of Military History (1986) recorded over 4,300 battles since 3500 BC. In top 20, WWI and WWII are among the bloodiest. More died in the 20th Century than in all wars fought from Genesis 14:2 to 1900 (called “The Violent Century” by Time-Life books.)

 “And there shall be earthquakes in divers places” Luke 21:11

NOTE

“And great earthquakes shall be in divers places…”

Scientists measure a “major” earthquake at 7.0-7.9 – “great” at 8.0-9.9 (Richter). According to the National Earthquake Information Center, 1987 to Jan 2010 saw 22 “great” and 324 “major” earthquakes. In 2004, 228,802 people died from the 9.1 earthquake-tsunami.

 “And there shall be famines and troubles” Luke 21:11

NOTE

“…and famines, and pestilences: and fearful sights and great signs…from heaven.”

We see famines all around the earth. And, we are bombarded daily by “pestilences” such as Ebola, Influenza, Bird flu, Cicado mania, etc. AIDS has now killed over five times the number that died from the Black Plague in the Dark Ages or the flu epidemic of 1917-1918.

 “These are the beginnings of sorrows.” Psalm 48:6

“…pain, as of a woman in travail.”

1 Thess 5:3

“…as travail upon a woman with child;”

NOTE

Jesus equated this time with the early pains of child birth. You know when you are close!

 “But take heed to yourselves…” NOTE

It is interesting to note that Jesus warned His disciples two times to TAKE HEED! The proper response to being taught these things is to take heed to yourself! Hold fast to God’s Word!
