Emergency and Contingency Planning Are you prepared to handle whatever emergencies may occur such as power outages or the need to evacuate your home? Do you know what to do in case of fire, tornado, severe storm, flooding or chemical emergencies? Is your emergency bag packed? If you are a caregiver, are you ready to assist your loved ones? Jean King, Resource Specialist with the Lake County Council on Aging, will discuss ways for Seniors to take advantage of various discounts available in our community. Location: Senior Center Activity Room 4 #21482 June 19 Tuesday 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Resident /Nonresident: Free 2012 Senior Games Lake Metroparks will once again be the host to the 2012 Senior Regional Games. Senior Games Registration fee is $20 and participants may enter as many events as they choose and will receive a T-shirt. This event provides a week long venue of competitive events and fun activities. Anybody can participate. You do not need to have an athletic background though it may be helpful with the track and field events. The Mentor Senior Center will be the host site of the Cornhole tournament on Thursday, June 7 at 2 pm. Pick up your flyer at the front desk. N.E. Ohio Hot Flashes

Now recruiting women‘s 50+ softball to compete locally, statewide and nationally. Join us at Lake County Captains stadium on Saturday, May 12 at 1 p.m. for a fundraiser to help send our women to State qualifying for the Senior Games. Tickets are only $9 and partial proceeds from ticket sales will go to the NE Ohio Flashes! For more information or to order tickets please contact Hot Flashes manager Helen Hayes at 440-257-3277. Buck, who grew up in China and became the first American woman writer to win the Nobel Prize, wrote that Chinese women "are the strongest women in the world." Min, a prime example of an indomitable Chinese woman, has made it her mission to reveal the truth about the lives of women in China, including Madame Mao, Empress Tzu Hsi, and now Buck. AARP Driving Safety Program Monday, May 7 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Licensed drivers 50 or older can take this class, designed to refine existing skills as well as develop new, safe defensive driving techniques. You may earn a certificate, and possibly qualify for lower auto insurance rate (check with your agent). Bring your driver‘s license and AARP card to the first class. On March 26 we held a Wii Bowling tournament for our first and second place teams from the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday groups. All participants had a great time and our winners were the team of Don Samber and Joan Calderone of the Friday group. Woodcarving Tuesday 2-4 p.m.

Culture Groups German Culture Group Monday, May 7, 10 a.m. The German Club will have a Kaffee Klatsch on the Main Hall stage. A $2 donation is required. Please join City Manager Ken Filipiak on May 16 at noon for his first quarterly presentation about city issues. You will have the opportunity to learn what‘s happening with the city and ask questions. See all the details on page 1. Mark your calendars for summer registration which begins April 30 for residents and May 3 for nonresidents. You can also find the registration dates for the remainder of 2012 on page 13 of the newsletter. Spring is the perfect time to try something new. Check out one of our recreational programs such as fishing, hiking club, bocce, corn hole or ping pong. Check out a fitness class you‘ve never tried such as chair yoga, stretch and balance or weight training. Sign up for the exercise equipment training class so you can begin using the fitness room. Share your time and talents and join the kitchen staff to help prepare delicious meals. We have 5 different positions, one is sure to be a good fit for you. Contact Cathy Jo or Julie in the kitchen to schedule a training time. I will look forward to seeing you at the center checking out something new!

Registration for SUMMER classes for Mentor residents begins at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, April 30 for all classes. Nonresident registration begins for all classes on Thursday, May 3 at 8:00 a.m. You may register for one other person only. Additional forms will be available at the Mentor Senior Center. Call if you have questions about completing the form. If you don’t come to in-person registration, please register at least one week before the beginning date of each class. The city of Mentor accepts cash, check or Visa and MasterCard. When registering online, Discover and American Express may also be used. Please register and pay at least one week before the beginning date of each class. The City of Mentor accepts Visa and Mastercard. When registering online, Discover and American Express may also be used. PROGRAM/ACTIVITY REFUND GUIDELINES READ CAREFULLY. 1. Full refund or transfer if Mentor Senior Center cancels the program/activity. 2. An administrative charge of $10 will be assessed if the participant cancels out of the program/activity. Yoga

We have a wonderful fitness center with a variety of cardiovascular equipment including 5 treadmills, 3 bikes, 2 seated ellipticals, and 3 standing ellipticals. The Tuff Stuff strength station offers a wide variety of exercises and the Precor stretch trainer offers great stretching options. Upcoming Programs Hop on The Bus The Association of the Specialists in Aging (ASA) presents HOP ON THE BUS, an opportunity to learn about options for seniors. We will visit area senior care facilities, tour each facility and meet the staff. The itinerary this year includes breakfast at the Mentor Senior Center, Tri-point Hospital, Altercare of Mentor, Heartland of Mentor for lunch, Kemper House and an ice-cream social at Golden Living. The day will include continental breakfast, lunch, ice cream, and door prizes. This event is free, but space is limited so advanced registration is required on a first come, first served basis until capacity is reached. Live Radio Show! The Mentor Senior Center will be host to WKKY 104.7 and Tri-County Service Consortium on May 8 from 8—10 a.m. for a live talk show. Tri-County is a group made up of individuals & organizations who advocate for the mature adult population. This group includes healthcare, financial professionals, real estate, home renovations/ construction and downsizing/rightsizing. Tri-County Senior Consortium hosts a radio show every other Tuesday and the last Saturday of every month on WKKY, 97.1 & 102.5. The show discusses life solutions for 55+ adults. The group also hosts educational events once a month in the Ashtabula, Geauga & Lake county areas. Meet the DJs and enjoy light refreshments. No registration required.
