Psalm 23 (NIV)

King of Hearts: A Shepherd’s Heart “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.” Philippians 4:12 Three Comforting Truths from Psalm 23: 1. Our Good Shepherd provides for our needs. “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way…” Isaiah 53:6 “He makes me lie down in green pastures.” Four requirements for a sheep to lie down: • • • •

First, they must be fed. Second, they must be confident. Third, they must be content. Fourthly, they must be compatible.

He leads me… He leads me beside the still waters… He restores my soul… “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:1 “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” 1 Peter 2:24-25 2. Our Good Shepherd protects us from evil. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. “God becomes a reality, when he becomes a necessity.” Richard Foster We need courage to trust the Shepherd. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 The deep, dark valleys are never a destination. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. “When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it…and rescued the sheep from its mouth” 1 Samuel 17:34-35 A good shepherd never left his sheep alone.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 3. Our Good Shepherd prepares a place for us in eternity. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life… And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. “The Lord is my shepherd … I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23 "The Lord is my shepherd; that's all I want."
