Professor of Economics University of Chicago & Nobel Memorial Prize Winner Professor James J. Heckman is the Henry Schultz Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, a Nobel Memorial Prize winner in economics and an expert in the economics of human development. Through the university's Center for the Economics of Human Development, he has conducted groundbreaking work with a consortium of economists, developmental psychologists, sociologists, statisticians and neuroscientists showing that quality early childhood development heavily influences health, economic and social outcomes for individuals and society at large. Professor Heckman has shown that there are great economic gains to be had by investing in early childhood development. Professor Heckman’s work has been widely described as providing some of the most impactful policy arguments for why local, state, and national leaders must prioritize and invest in early learning. As Executive Director of ZERO TO THREE, Matthew Melmed has significantly expanded the organization’s impact in promoting the health and development of infants and toddlers. Mr. Melmed is committed to translating what we know into what we do for America’s youngest children. Since 1995 he has guided the considerable growth of the organization’s activities in support of professionals, policymakers and parents in their efforts to ensure that every baby has a strong start in life. Under his leadership ZERO TO

THREE has launched a number of major programmatic and policy initiatives. Mr. Melmed served as the first elected Chair of the Children’s Leadership Council, a coalition of 55 leading national policy and advocacy organizations working to improve the health, education and well-being of America’s children and youth. He currently serves as CLC Treasurer. In addition, he serves as Chair on the Board of Generations United, a Trustee of the Turrell Fund in New Jersey and Immediate Past-Chair of the Board of the Food Research and Action Center. Judy Cameron, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Science Outreach at the University of Pittsburgh. For 10 years she was a member of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Early Experience and Brain Development and she is currently a member of the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child. Dr. Cameron’s research focuses on the effects of everyday life stresses on long-term health. Areas of interest in her laboratory are the effects of genetic factors and early life experiences on behavioral development, and identification of factors that lead to stress sensitivity versus stress resilience. She has a long-term interest in understanding the interactions between physical health and mental health. Dr. Cameron is also a member of the Dana Alliances for Brain Initiatives, which is a nonprofit organization of neuroscientists committed to advancing public awareness of brain research in an accessible fashion. In this role she gives numerous public lectures each year. She also participates in a number of activities that have translated science to the public including a film segment for ABC’s 20/20 on “Busting Scientific Myths” and a PBS Frontline Special on animal research helping solve the mystery of Parkinson’s Disease. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Arizona in 1981.
