Fonds Description Margaret Street fonds. – 1905-1976. 1.05 m of textual records. Biographical Sketch Margaret Mary Street (1907-1993) was born in Toronto and received a B.A. from the University of Manitoba in 1928. In 1936, she graduated from the Royal Victoria Hospital School and, in 1942, she earned her Masters degree in Nursing from McGill University. She then taught nursing in Montreal, Winnipeg and Victoria prior to coming to UBC in 1952 for one year. After eight years as associate director of nursing in Calgary, Street earned a M.Sc. in Nursing Service Administration from Boston University. In 1960, she returned to UBC where she remained until her retirement in 1972. As a personal commitment to help mark the golden jubilee of UBC's School of Nursing, Street undertook a project to write a biography of Ethel Johns. Published in 1973, WatchFires on the Mountains: The Life and Writings of Ethel Johns, recounted the career of Johns (1879-1968), one of Canada's pioneer nurses who influenced the development of the profession and also served as the first director of nursing at UBC. Scope and Content The fonds consists of records generated during Street's writing of the biography of Ethel Johns. It includes correspondence (1969-1974) with publishers and the Canada Council which funded the project; transcripts of interviews with students, friends and associates (1969-1970); copies of Johns' addresses and publications (including portions of an unfinished autobiography); and draft manuscripts for the book Watch-Fires on the Mountains. Notes File list available. Previously known as the "Ethel Johns Research Collection". Title based on the contents of the fonds. Related materials in the Ethel Johns fonds.

The series consists of personal information pertaining to Ethel Johns and other material relating to Street's biography project. Correspondence series. – 1968-1976. 26 cm of textual records. The series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence pertaining to various stages of the project. Interviews series. – 1969-1970. 9 cm of textual records. The series consists of transcripts of interviews carried out with former students, friends and colleagues of Ethel Johns. Research Material series. – 1908-1970. 33 cm of textual records. The series consists of copies of research material on Ethel Johns and related topics from various libraries and archives. Writings and Addresses series. – 1908-1955. 14 cm of textual records. The series consists of articles, editorials and speeches by Johns. Other Sources and Miscellaneous series. – 1922-1993. 7 cm of textual records. The series consists of additional research material consulted as part of the biography project, manuscript preparation guides and also a few items donated after Margaret Street's death. Watch-fires on the Mountains series. – 1973-1976. 13 cm of textual records.
The series consists of manuscript drafts of chapters from the book as well as some postproduction material.
