October 1-4, 2014

Message from the HonoraryCo-chairs Greetings! On behalf of Florida Memorial University (FMU), we are delighted to invite you to join us for Inaugural Events highlighting the appointment of Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, J.D. Ed.D., 13th President and first woman appointed to the position. This year we will take the opportunity to showcase our, dynamic President in conjunction with our annual scholarship gala event. These events are critically important to us as we strive to establish strong relationships with respected corporations, such as yours, to help us in successfully educating our students. The gala also offers networking and relationship-building opportunities among our FMU alumni, business professionals, and community leaders. We have planned inaugural activities for October 1 – 4, 2014, and ask you to please support and plan to join us as we usher in bold, fresh and solid leadership to steer the University forward. We are pleased to present you with this year’s sponsorship package. The opportunity to partner with us during the inaugural week celebration will allow you to have a direct role in our mission to offer scholarship support for talented students who might otherwise be unable to afford college. We look forward to working with you as the success of many of our students depends on your generous support. We are excited to establish a strong working relationship with you as we move into the future together. On behalf of Florida Memorial University and hundreds of prospective students, we want to thank you in advance for taking the time to review our sponsorship package and committing to a sponsorship level. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at 305-626-3613 (Ms. Daye) or 305-626-3611 (Ms. Shaheed) if you are in need of additional information. We look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely,

ABOUT FLORIDA MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY

F

lorida Memorial University (FMU), a private, coeducational, Historically Black University related to Baptist Churches and traditions, is one of Florida’s oldest academic centers, and is the only Historically Black University in South Florida. FMU has its origins in the Florida Baptist Institute, founded in 1879 in Live Oak, Florida and in the Florida Baptist Academy, founded in 1892 in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1918, the institution relocated to St. Augustine, Florida. The institutions merged in 1941 to form the Florida Normal and Industrial Institute. In 1963, the name was changed to Florida Memorial College. Fully engaged in the civil rights movement in the early 1960’s for racial equality and social justice, many courageous FMU faculty, staff and students risked their lives during this tumultuous period in the history of our country. The racial strife resulted in the decision to relocate the college. Rebounding and resilient, the college relocated from St. Augustine to its present South Florida location in 1968, and is currently located in the City of Miami Gardens. In December 2004, the institution’s charter was amended, and the name Florida Memorial University was adopted.

FMU’s legacy of determination and accomplishment establishes the premise and place for the promise of a future. The FMU legacy is firmly rooted in steadfast dedication and commitment to pursue its mission through “instilling in students the importance of becoming global citizens through life-long learning, leadership, character, and service which will enhance their lives and the lives of others.” The University serves a culturally diverse student population through programs in liberal and professional education. Opportunities to pursue career goals are offered through 41 undergraduate degree programs and 4 graduate degree programs. The FMU faculty is equally diverse, with approximately 80% of full-time faculty holding a Ph.D. or terminal degree. These degree programs are designed to prepare students to function in a highly competitive, technological and global society. Florida Memorial University is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, the National Association of Schools of Music, the Council on Social Work Education and other important and relevant memberships and affiliations.

One among many notable and proud distinctions about FMU: In Jacksonville, President Nathan White Collier recruited noted faculty, including J. Rosamond Johnson who, while employed at Florida Baptist Academy, wrote the poem “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.” The poem was set to music by his brother, James Weldon Johnson, and became the song that is now known as the Negro National Anthem.

As stated by Dr. Artis, “The future is bright, and we are ready and able to respond to new challenges that will strengthen the University.
