Course Description Aim: Students enrolled in this class will be given the opportunity to explore Health Science Careers and evaluate personal career aspirations. They will discover and develop foundation skills that are essential to all health care workers. This will be accomplished by student participation in a variety of activities that includes medical ethics, communication, safety practices and career exploration lessons. Topics covered: Career exploration Healthcare delivery system Healthcare legal and ethical issues Safety practices in the healthcare environment Communication in healthcare Place within the program of study: Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Length: Semester long, 50 minute periods Prerequisite: None Instructional Philosophy and Instructional Delivery Plan Expectations for student performance: Students are expected to meet all of the course goals and be able to demonstrate their understanding of the underlying concepts. Students will complete all course requirements at a minimum of 70% to pass the course. How the instruction will be delivered: The class will be presented through Blackboard and supported with interactive video (DDN). The instruction will include demonstrations by the instructor with return demonstrations done by students, class discussions, a healthcare facility tour, SCRUBS camp participation, activities and projects. How students will work: Students will be assigned activities and projects that will require them to work independently and in groups. January 2, 2012

How the community will be used: Community healthcare facilities will be accessed for a tour and a shadowing experience with a healthcare professional as available. How will students be evaluated: Activities and projects will be scored on rubrics. A final written assessment will be completed. Course Goals Students will learn how to: A. Explore career options in the health sciences. B. Analyze careers in the health sciences in respect to job duties, training and qualifications needed. C. Assess personality interests that are common in healthcare careers. D. Demonstrate basic technical skills representative of entry level healthcare jobs. E. Analyze soft skills needed in healthcare careers. F. Apply skills to an authentic situation in a healthcare facility.

Health Care Skill Standards By completing this course, students will achieve the following standards: Indicator # 1: Identify health career options, characteristics and key employability skills using the career decision-making process.

Examples:  Describe an organizational chart of a healthcare facility  Identify the career roles within various healthcare facilities  Explain impact of emerging issues such as technology, epidemiology, bioethics, and socioeconomics on healthcare delivery systems  Discuss common methods of payment for healthcare, including third party payers, managed care, and governmental programs.

Indicator # 3: Apply communication skills needed in a healthcare setting. Bloom’s Taxonomy Level Applying

Standard and Examples. HC1 3.1 Examine subjective and objective information to communicate patient status. Examples:  Utilize SOAP charting format to interpret communication  Dramatize a situation where a patient is in pain and interpret subjective symptoms  Discuss problems that occur when healthcare workers write incorrect information in the patient’s record

Understanding

HC1 3.2 Comprehend speaking and listening skills using the sender-receiver model. Examples: Illustrate the sender-receiver model in a communication poster or through role playing  Discuss the potential of problems to occur when information is not received as it was intended  Give an example of a patient/healthcare provider communication barrier  Explain how to use listening techniques in patient care  Explain correct reflection, restatement, and clarification techniques when listening to a patient

Examples:  Dramatize a legal or ethical situation  Draw a Venn Diagram illustrating medical ethical and legal issues  Describe implications of unethical behavior  Dramatize a situation that requires use of one of the rights from the Patients’ Bill of Rights  Discuss implications of failure to use the Patients’ Bill of Rights

Analyzing

HC1 4.4 Examine religious and cultural values as they impact ethical issues in healthcare. Examples:  Discuss the impact of religions and cultures on those giving and receiving health care  Illustrate what one believes are some of the more prominent values in today’s society  Demonstrate respect of an individual’s cultural, social, and ethnic diversity

Indicator # 5: Apply safety practices in the healthcare environment. Bloom’s Taxonomy Level Applying

Standard and Examples. HC1 5.1 Demonstrate methods of controlling microorganism growth (standard precautions). Examples:  Demonstrate handwashing with aseptic techniques  Demonstrate use of personal protective equipment including isolation procedures  Demonstrate donning and removing sterile gloves and setting up a sterile treatment tray  Demonstrate cleaning of a hard surface contaminated with body fluid and disposal of contaminated waste  Illustrate an exposure incident with correct safety actions using protocol for exposure incidents

Applying

HC1 5.2 Apply principles of body mechanics and ergonomics in the healthcare environment. Examples:  Interpret the acronym STABLE  Demonstrate proper body mechanics to prevent injury  Identify injuries that occur when proper body mechanics are not utilized
