Mad Science

7/2 End of withdrawal period for six week session Asnuntuck Community College will host four weeks of Mad Science Awesome Activity this summer. Designed to be fun, hands on and very interactive, students will be participating in both indoor and outdoor activities. Class size is limited for these offerings. Each week costs $249 with the exception of Eureka/Robots which has a fee of $270 (which includes a $20 materials fee for robots). Youngsters ranging in age from 8-12 can participate from July 14th-July 18th in the Eureka/ Robots program. Those enrolled in that week’s programming will be given a series of challenges and they must overcome the obstacles by using basic materials. They will also have the opportunity to delve into the world of robots and machines during this week. Participants will work with circuits, wheels, gears and sensors to construct their own robot. The following three weeks of programming will be geared for children 7-12 years of age. During the week of July 21st-July 25th students will participate in a program developed by NASA and Mad Science. This hands-on program will cover information regarding the Earth’s atmosphere and the solar system. During this week they will also learn about the fundamentals of flight, propulsion and rocket design. The third week will run from July 28th through August 1st. This Secret Agent Lab will have students experience a hands-on look at crime scenes. They will discover how chemistry and the science of forensics work together to accomplish the mission when you are a secret agent. The summer’s programming will conclude the week of August 4th through the 8th. Nature Adventure and Crazy ChemLab will allow 7-12 year olds to be junior scientists while exploring energy, motion, water and animals. Call Asnuntuck at 860-253-3066 or 860-253-3034. ISSUE

ACC student Brent Read is working on a community service project. He is asking for students, staff and faculty to donate white cotton pillow cases. Pictures of deployed family members will be printed on the cases and they will be presented to children in care packages at Westover Airman and Family Readiness Center. This will allow the children to keep their family members close while they are stationed far away. A collection box will be located at ACC’s Information Desk until July 15th. Questions? Contact Jen Gahr at [email protected] or Brent Read at [email protected].

Messenger Named Recipient of Keating Scholarship Enfield Realtor Joyce Keating has never forgotten the struggles she faced and the obstacles she overcame as a single mother of two daughters when she decided to go back to college and become the successful businesswoman she is today. The Asnuntuck Community College (ACC) Alumna has always remembered to pay it forward and one local woman is happy that she does. ACC student Monica Messenger is also a single mother and she also has been committed to continuing her education. The non-traditional student received her Associate’s degree from ACC this past May and has been accepted into a competitive accelerated nursing program at Elms College this fall. “I needed one more prerequisite for Elms,” explained Messenger. The ACC alumna, who graduated with a 3.96 GPA found herself in somewhat of a bind, she could not afford to take the history class she needed at ACC in order to move onto The Elms. ACC’s Financial Aid office recommended that Messenger speak to the President’s Office to see if ACC’s Foundation had any scholarships she could apply to receive. Susan Beaudoin, who serves as a liaison for ACC Foundation, Inc. and who serves as Executive Assistant to the President, knew that no students this past year had qualified for Keating’s Woman in Business scholarship. Susan made some calls to see if Messenger could be a candidate due to her immediate need. Keating, who also serves on The Foundation’s Board, was willing to consider Messenger as a candidate after receiving information about her situation. She felt a connection since her daughter is in the nursing field. “Her letter touched my heart,” says Keating. She said her inspiration for starting the scholarship came from an instructor she had at ACC. “Fred Bartlett gave me the impetus to start my own business. I will forever be grateful for his belief in me and my success.” Messenger has committed that when she is financially able she will start her own scholarship at ACC and one day she would like to participate on the Foundation’s Board. Messenger says she is very thankful for Keating’s willingness to award her a scholarship. “She is so sweet and so generous.” She continued, “Financially there was no way I could afford the class. It made a world of difference for me.”

Lorrie Roche decided to attend Asnuntuck Community College because she wanted to make a career change. “My goal was to complete all of the undergraduate courses that I needed before transferring into a Master’s in Elementary Education program. I also knew about the great Reading Room at Asnuntuck, and as I was a single mom with 3 year old twin boys at the time, it truly made it possible for me to return to the academic world.”

August 6, 12, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28, and September .2nd and 3rd. ACC will be open from 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. on these days.

She began her academic journey at Asnuntuck in January of 2008. She had already earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, but it had been over twenty years since she had been in a classroom.

Academic Advisors are available all other Mondays-Wednesdays until 6 p.m.

She felt the influence of many while at ACC. “Everyone I met and came in contact with at Asnuntuck, touched my life in a positive way. From instructors, to classes, financial aid advisors, academic skills center employees, or the staff at the Reading Room, Asnuntuck offered an accessible, supportive, and comfortable learning environment. “ she continued, “If I hadn’t had the Reading Room with Pam Keenan and Catherine Juozokas at the Academic Skills Center that first year, I may never have continued. Teresa Foley changed how I looked at learning Algebra, and for the first time it made sense to me. Carol LaLiberte was an amazing professor who offered a top quality course of early childhood education, and later became extremely influential in charting my course toward graduation from ACC.” “My transition to the Master’s Program I attended at the University of Hartford was very smooth. If I needed any type of assistance, someone was always ready to help, including Jill Rushbrook.” She added, “I sent transcripts to UHart once my prerequisites were complete, and began my classes. While I studied there, I continued to take classes at Asnuntuck when I could.” She continued, “In December of 2012, I graduated from UHart with a Master’s in Elementary Education. It meant a great deal to me to return to Asnuntuck in order to complete my requirements and graduate from the college that had been there to support me with endless authentic and quality experiences. Asnuntuck definitely got me back into the academic world after many years away, and made my quest for a master’s degree an attainable one. I was able to fulfill my other dream as well, and graduated with my Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Ed. from Asnuntuck in May of 2013.” She is presently employed within the Windsor Public School System as a building substitute teacher for Poquonock Primary School. “I served a long term, 3 month, substitute position in a Kindergarten classroom.”
