17 July 2015 Dear Parents/Carers I am writing to you with our last official newsletter for the academic year and the end of what I believe has been one of the most successful periods in our recent history. I would like to start by thanking the staff for their dedication and commitment in allowing the school to move forward, and providing teaching and support that enabled pupils to enjoy and achieve in their time at Wellfield. Inspire and Achieve Awards Evening This week we held our 4th annual awards evening. It was amazing to see so many of our pupils receive awards for their achievement and progress across the school. I hope that I will shortly be able to email out some of the photographs to the award winners. The support from our parents and families was heart-warming and testament to the strength of support I believe we have as a school. I am sure as we move forward our pupil’s achievements will continue to grow, and we will try to ensure that their efforts are recognised throughout the school year. I would like to make a special mention of our top achievers for this year who received the coveted Assistant Headteacher’s awards and the trophies for Headteacher’s “Learner of the Year”. Assistant Headteacher Awards were presented to: Bethany Harvey – Year 7, Rebecca Chester – Year 8, Lauren Nicholls – Year 9, Declan Disley – Year 10 Headteacher “Learner of the Year” trophies were awarded to: Kate Weatherby – Year 7, Beth Moore – Year 8, Willow Dyson – Year 9, Danielle Ingham – Year 10 This year there was one pupil who was recognised for his outstanding achievements and that was Jacob White in Year 10 who received the trophy for Headteachers Award for Outstanding Progress and Effort. GCSE Results: Pupils in Year 10 will be able to collect their GCSE Science results on Thursday 20 August from our Sports Hall between 9-11 a.m. with our Year 11 pupils. We are hoping that they will be our best results ever and a clear sign of the improvements that the school has made in the last three years. Junior Leadership Team Interviews: We will be interviewing for our Junior Leadership Team including Head Boy and Girl and the Heads of House on our last day and will announce these at our end of year assembly and via our social media sites. Rugby Academy: In September we are launching a new initiative to develop our pupils’ sporting interests through the Wellfield Rugby Academy. The aim of the academy is to build the skills of pupils’ playing abilities in rugby and nurture the ethos of rugby throughout the school with the core values of rugby: Respect, Discipline, Sportsmanship, Teamwork and Enjoyment. We have had much success this year with rugby and I believe we can further develop not only the playing

abilities of our pupils but also leadership skills across a wide range of boys and girls. We have developed external links with the RFU and Sale Sharks, and are hoping our local Leyland Warriors will also take this forward to help support achievement and aspiration at Wellfield. Pupils will be able to apply to be a part of the academy and this will entitle them to year round rugby coaching programmes and enrichment activities with expectations in terms of attendance and conduct in return. Over the last 10 months whilst we have been exploring this exciting opportunity for our pupils and the school, we have already been involved in a number of events. This has included organising an RFU Festival of Rugby for primary schools and hosting an RFU coaching course during May and June with another planned for later in the year. We were also asked by the Youth Sports Trust for pupils to design and produce 51 welcome cards for the Italian Rugby World Cup squad, for when they arrive in England for the start of their preparations for the Rugby World Cup this September. Furthermore, in September, we will start working with the Sale Sharks Community Trust and joining their “Number Cruncherz” programme on delivering financial skills for Year 7 which will also include a trip to the Sale Shark AJ Bell Stadium in October. Challenge Inspection: We have been patiently waiting for a visit from Ofsted this term and it is now likely to take place in the Autumn Term. The new inspection framework is much tougher but I am confident that we will have a positive outcome because of the improvements we have made since our last inspection in November 2013. I ask parents for your help with providing evidence for the impending inspection by completing the Parental survey on Ofsted’s Parentview website https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk . I will ensure you have as much notice as possible to enable you to be able to complete or update this when we get the short notice. School Session Times: A reminder that school will finish at 3.10 p.m. from September 2015. I ask that parents use side roads or Asda’s car park to arrange the dropping off or collection of pupils at the start and end of the school day. This will avoid the busy times around the main school gates when pupils are walking and cycling in and out of the school. Safety of pupils is paramount to us all please help support us in this. Planners: In September pupils will be issued with a Planner and we ask for a contribution towards the cost of this essential equipment item. We have tried our best to keep costs down and have subsidised the cost for many years, this year we ask for a £3.00 contribution. Nurture Uniform: As we break up for the summer holidays I also remind parents to ensure that when pupils return in September they are dressed appropriately for school following our Uniform policy (on our website). If your child is planning to have their ears pierced, these should be done at the start of the holidays so that piercings can be removed for school at the start of September. No make-up and no tramlines in hair are permitted. Breakfast Club: Since Christmas we have been able to provide a free breakfast allocation for all pupils. From September whilst we will continue our Breakfast Club we will only be able to provide free cereal for pupils. There will be other breakfast items that pupils will be able to purchase but the free allocation will be for cereals, due to reduced funding. When we started the ‘free for all’ allocation it was anticipated that the funding would only last for the month of January and we have managed to make it last until the end of the school year.

First Day in September: We start back after the summer holiday on Monday 7 September at 11.15 a.m. for all pupils in Years 8 to 11, allowing our new Year 7 to settle in from 8.55 a.m. Holiday dates for 2015-2016 are available via our website but I have included some key dates for next year below. I wish you all an enjoyable summer break and thank you for your continued support of Wellfield. Yours sincerely
