Chemicals should remain in their original containers if possible. The labels of these containers should not be defaced. Two dates should be included on the labels of all original containers – the date of receipt and the date on which the container was opened. Many labels display the NFPA diamond. A link to the meaning of the code is provided here. (www.ilpi.com/msds/ref/nfpa.html) Chemicals may be transferred to other containers or used to prepare solutions. These secondary containers must be labeled. The label should include:  Name and concentration (if applicable) of the chemical  Full name of chemical, not abbreviation (ethanol, not EtOH)  Chemical formula may be used (HCl or Hydrochloric Acid)  Date of preparation and initials of preparer  Hazard information or appropriate color code Labels should be firmly affixed to the containers.
