I graduated from the ICA Leadership Program. It was awesome.

One of many ICA classes of Leadership graduates.

Iowa CareGivers Association’s (ICA’s) “A Call to Leadership: A Direct Care Worker’s Guide to Developing Leadership Skills”

Purpose

‘‘

I traveled to Washington DC to meet with Iowa members of Congress to tell my story. “I led a ‘Come Care with Me’ event for my legislator at my workplace.”

Who Should Attend? All direct care workers such as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Certified Medication Aides (CMAs), Home Care or Home Health Aides (HCAs/HHAs), Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), Consumer Directed Attendant Care Workers (CDAC), Universal Workers, and other direct care workers.

When You Complete the Program, You’ll Be Able to:

‘‘

I volunteered at the ICA conference.

• Define the meaning of professionalism and how it applies to direct care workers. • List three ways to personally contribute to the positive image of the profession of direct care. • Identify five qualities of successful leaders. • Discuss ways in which you see yourself as a leader. • Identify possible barriers to taking a leadership role and list ways to overcome each barrier. • Define advocacy as it applies to the direct care profession, and explain its importance.

“My story appears on a DVD that has been shown nationally.”

“I staffed the ICA exhibit at a statewide conference.”

“I serve on the ICA Direct Care Worker Leadership Council.”

‘‘

“I was opening speaker for an ICA public forum.”

‘‘

This leadership program is a one-day, educational program for direct care workers. It is taught by a qualified Iowa CareGivers Association education specialist. Students are asked to think more broadly about leadership outside of the workplace, professionalism, and how to become a spokesperson and role model for the direct care profession.

“I was appointed to serve on a state task force.”

‘‘

What is the ICA Program, “A Call to Leadership?”

Why YOU Should Attend

‘‘

To promote the development of personal and professional leadership among direct care workers.

Cost

I testified before a legislative committee.

On average, 94% of those who complete the ICA Leadership Program, “A Call to Leadership,” say it increases the likelihood that they will remain in the field of direct care.

There is no cost to attend this program. A light continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Certificate Certificates of attendance will be provided to direct care workers by the Iowa CareGivers Association for 5.0 contact hours.
