City’s windrow clearing four times faster Last week City crews put a newly purchased snow blower to work and saw a huge increase in efficiency and productivity. “We started at 4 am in the morning and picked up the windrows on 100th, 102nd, 103rd streets and on 11th and 10th Avenue within 4 hours”, says Colin Carriere, Operations Foreman, Public Works. “That normally would have taken us 2 days.” When clearing, graders push the snow onto the sides of the streets, leaving rows of piled up snow known as windrows. Until last week City crews used a front-end loader to pick up these windrows, tip them into a truck and haul it to a designated snow dump site. Now, the new loader-mounted snow blower drives slowly along the windrows, picking up the snow and transporting it through the telescopic chute onto the accompanying truck. “Finding new ways to increase productivity of day to day tasks is one of our goals in the City”, says City Manager Jim Puffalt. “By putting new and proper equipment to work we were able to complete this task four times faster than before, which gives us more capacity to tend to other City services.” City crews were also able to remove the snow with very little disruption to the flow of traffic. The new LM 220 loader-mounted snow blower was purchased in spring of 2015 and arrived in the fall. City crews received training on January 14 in order to properly operate and maintain the equipment.
