13 November 2015 Dear Parents/Carers I am writing to you with some further updates for the Autumn term at Wellfield. Inspire and Achieve UCAS Progress: As you may be aware, the government changed the school leaving age and from summer 2015 young people will be required, by law, to stay on at college/work related apprenticeships until their 18th birthday. In meeting this challenge, colleges, sixth forms, and other learning providers have an increased responsibility to ensure that they’re able to accommodate an influx of learners and attract the right pupils to the right courses. Despite these best efforts, until now, pupils have largely done a lot of the legwork involved in finding a suitable course themselves. The fact that they often need to complete an individual paper application for every course they’re interested in can make the process long and laborious. Thankfully there’s a new service that simplifies these crucial steps: UCAS Progress. This free national scheme is run by UCAS, the admissions service for higher education, but is specifically designed to help younger students navigate their next steps and find a post-16 course that’s right for them. At Wellfield, we are coming on board with using UCAS Progress. Pupils can apply for as many courses as they want – but they only fill in a single application which they can use time and again. To find out more about UCAS Progress, take a look online at: www.ucas.com/progress. Alternatively please feel free to contact Miss Capaldi directly if you, or your son or daughter, have any questions. Year 11 Parents Evening: Thank you to all those who attended last night’s Parents’ Evening. Well done to Mrs Park’s form who achieved 100% attendance. If you were unable to attend and would like to speak with someone regarding your child’s progress please contact Mrs Gowerson in the first instance. Challenge Anti-Bullying Week: 16th - 20th November, the theme is ‘Make a Noise about bullying’ with the #antibullyingweek. The key aims of the week are...   

To empower children and young people to make a noise about bullying – whether it is happening to them or to someone else, face to face or online; To help parents and carers have conversations with their children about bullying – both as a way of preventing bullying, and to help children who are worried about bullying; To encourage ‘talking schools’ where all children and young people are given a safe space to discuss bullying and other issues that affect their lives, and are supported to report all forms of bullying; To raise awareness of the impact of bullying on children’s lives if they don’t tell anyone it’s happening – or if they are not given appropriate support – with a focus on the impact on mental health.

Each year group will have an assembly on this topic and there will be active work during registrations and tutorials next week. Information for parents will be updated on our school website. Nurture Email addresses: As a school we always aim to keep parents as up to date as possible, and frequently copies of letters are now emailed to parents/carers as well as being sent home with your child. If we do not have your email address on file, or you wish to update this information, please email [email protected]; please don’t forget to include your child’s name. Under Data Protection I would like to reassure parents and carers that any email addresses provided are solely for the use of school communications. Child Sexual Exploitation: Please find attached a copy of a letter regarding Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Week. A copy of which is also available on our website. Thank you as ever for your continued support of the school. Yours sincerely
