Our puppies range in age from about 3 months old to about 6 months old. Dingo, Tinka, Zara, Ziggy, and Pebbles, our smallest puppies, are siblings (Dingo is the only boy). Luna, Kiki, and Gigi (all girls) are their buddies and the 8 of them have a wonderful time romping in Puppy World each day. White bundles of fluff, brothers Sky and Red spend their day with Tigi and Mia (both girls). They are energetic, but then calm down and like to cuddle. All currently available puppies are shown on page 4! CLINIC BY APPOINTMENT: As of Monday, April 17, we will be pleased to schedule an appointment for your pet with our new vet, Adriana Rivera. We will resume our regular hours that week, including discount Tuesdays and Saturdays. Please call 152-6124 for an appointment.

April Pets of the Month By Lynn Weisberg and Joan DiPiero

About 3 years old, Smooshy, named by his rescuers because he is gentle and loving, (the opposite of what many folks think of pit bulls), was having a tough time surviving on the streets. Small/medium -sized, he is adorable. Simba, about 2-1/2, was a roof dog, abandoned and then brought to us by discerning neighbors. He’s a medium-sized, mixed-breed, affectionate, goofy, handsome sweetheart. Both guys enjoy playing, walks, and tummy rubs.

Just under a year old, Aussie sports a stylish black and white Tuxedo suit and is the perfect mix of sweet kitten charm and adult tranquility. Both a snuggler and a lap kitty, he's pretty special.

Adopt any of these Pets of the Month during April and receive a free adoption kit. Our adoption fee is 400 pesos for cats and 450 pesos for dogs which includes sterilization, vaccinations, and deworming and, for dogs, enrollment in the Green Paw Pet Registration Program.

Girls' Club By Joan DiPiero Calico and tortoiseshell cats, not a breed, but a color type, are always female (with very few exceptions). Right now at the S.P.A., we have perfect examples of all four types - calico, tortoise, and dilute versions of each.

Madeline, a black, orange and white calico sweetheart, is a mellow twoyear-old mama who prefers living with the kittens, although her own babies have grown.

Three-year-old Winifred, a peach, gray and white dilute calico who enjoys being petted, is playful and young at heart.

Margo, a ten-month-old tortoise, black with threads of henna, is affectionate and fun-loving.

Two-year-old Elena, a dilute tortoise, features luxuriant gray and peach long fur and is one of our most loving cats. She never tires of sitting on laps.

Which is your favorite? Meet these and all our adoptable animals at the S.P.A., Los Pinos 7, 1526124, Monday-Saturday, 11-2. If you would like to adopt a cat, we will ask you some questions and then introduce you to our cats. Cat adoptions are 400 pesos. This includes vaccinations, deworming, and sterilization. We also offer an adoption kit (tote bag, litter box, litter, scoop, and starter food) for 200 pesos. See you at the S.P.A.!

Nube By Harry Burrus When I look at Nube, I am propelled into the Klondike—Yukon Territory. I hear the mushers call out their commands: “Gee!” “Haw!” “On By.” But wait; I am in the high desert plateau of the bajío. No snow. No sleds. I do hear other dog walkers saying, “Leave it!” “Dejalo!” Nube, however, has mastered bi-location. We are together in the Klondike and we’re walking here. Miss Nube has a quiet, regal dignity. She will bark when it’s chicken dinner time as she sees the chicken being handed out. She’ll let you know, too, when strangers appear around the casitas. On the surface, Nube appears a touch aloof. Removed. I like that. She’s not demonstratively gushy. Yet, she’s quite tender with her affection. I value the licks and kisses she bestows. When she presses her head against mine, we both glow. With Nube I am again reminded of the magic of animals. I remove myself from personal things and focus entirely on her. Rather than trying to exercise my mind and thinking about all those essential life moments that badger us, I let go of those unending externals. I become intertwined with the moment of Nube and, by doing so, find myself being completely there, absorbing each step, each glance, each twitch of an ear. We’re a part of each other. One. Remarkably, being in cahoots with Nube pulls back the curtain on life’s distractions and I see them with greater clarity and in proper perspective. I’m thankful for that. If you’re curious and would like to meet Nube, please come to the S.P.A., Los Pinos 7, 152-6124, any day, Monday-Saturday, 11-2. Meet this beauty who walks well on a lease and responds to guidance. Recognize you will have to earn her trust. If she accepts you and you are committed to providing her a good home, you will be one fortunate individual. Your life will be greatly enriched.

Sisterly Love By Megan Gabel Sisters Snowflake and Thunder are medium/large black beauties, almost a year old. Their personalities and appearances are very similar. Both are smart, playful, sweet, and friendly. They are full of love and quick to give kisses. They enjoying going for walks and are also quite content to sprawl in your lap and relax.

Medium-sized sisters Maya and Spice, a little over two years old, are also beautiful, but they don’t look or act alike. Maya, with piercing amber eyes, has a gentle, calm disposition. She is selfconfident, outgoing, fearless, friendly, and inquisitive. Our hearts go out to Spice who, when outside for a walk, has a furrowed brow and is anxiously on the alert for strangers, cars, and sudden noises. Feeling vulnerable, she seeks comfort and reassurance from the volunteer who is walking her and, without fail, she gets it. She feels more secure if her sister or another dog is along for the walk.

Meet these girls and all our adoptable animals at the S.P.A., Los Pinos 7, 152-6124, any day, Monday-Saturday, 11-2. Please peruse our website, www.spasanmiguel.org to learn about the S.P.A., our animals, photos, videos, volunteering, fostering, fundraising, etc. – it’s chock full of great information!
