Overview of Project Management Institute Certification The Project Management Institute (PMI) sponsors a project management certification program. The purpose and goal of this project management certification program is the development, maintenance, evaluation, promotion, and administration of a rigorous, examination-based, professional certification program of the highest caliber.

To achieve PMP certification, each candidate must satisfy all educational and experiential requirements established by PMI and must demonstrate an acceptable and valid level of understanding and knowledge about project management that is tested by the Project Management Professional Certification Examination. Eligibility Notification A PMP Certification Examination Eligibility Letter will be mailed to qualifying candidates within 10-14 working days after receipt of the PMP Certification Examination Application. This letter confirms that candidates are eligible to take the examination. The examination must be taken within a three (3)-month period.

Each question is subjected to editing for technical adequacy by psychometric consultants. Thus, content experts (PMPs) write the questions and validate their appropriateness for the examination, and experts in testing review the questions to ensure that the questions perform as intended.

Passing Point Examination Item Development Test questions for the PMP Certification Examination:

8

are developed by work groups of PMPs

are independently validated by PMP judges

The passing point for the PMP Certification Examination is determined by a criterionreferenced approach called the Angoff Modified Technique. This technique is currently considered by testing professionals to be one of the most defensible criterionreferenced methods available for establishing passing points because it relies on the pooled judgments of content experts (PMPs). With this approach, a group of PMP judges is asked

to review each item on the examination. For each question, judges determine the probability that minimally knowledgeable candidates will answer the item correctly. The average of the probabilities is multiplied by the total number of questions on the examination. The result then represents the minimally acceptable score. The final passing point for the examination is based on this pooled judgment and the calculation of the standard error of the mean. Finally, item analysis and reliability indexes are calculated for each question.

Examination Format and Content The PMP Certification Examination is a computer-based examination administered at Sylvan Technology Centers and is comprised of 200 multiple-choice questions. The allotted time to complete the exam is 4.5 hours. The examination specifications for the examination are based on job analysis results. The breakdown is as follows: ◆

4 % project initiation

37 % project planning

24 % project execution

28 % project control

7 % project closing

The examination administration includes a briefing and fifteen (15)-minute computer tutorial, the PMP Certification Examination, examination score report, and an optional candidate satisfaction and demographic survey.

Sylvan Technology Center offers a practice session to candidates unfamiliar with computers. This session is unrelated to the PMP Examination content.

Request for Special Examination Accommodations Any candidate may request a modification in the PMP Certification Examination administration procedure due to disability, handicap, or other condition which may impair the ability of the candidate to take the examination. In order to request special testing accommodations, the candidate must properly complete the Request for Special Accommodations for the PMP Certification Examination Form, which can be requested from the PMI Certification Department. The candidate must provide the PMI Certification Department with written documentation from an appropriate health care professional supporting the requested testing accommodation. This documentation must: ◆

include a diagnosis of the candidate’s health condition and a specific recommendation and justification for the special testing accommodation required

be included with the submission of the PMP Certification Examination Application

be received by the PMI Certification Department at least thirty (30) days in advance of the candidate’s desired examination date 9

The candidate is responsible for demonstrating that the request should be granted. The PMI Certification Department shall review the request and notify the candidate of its determination. The PMI Certification Department will not pay any costs that may be incurred by the candidate in obtaining the required diagnosis and recommendation. However, the PMI Certification Department will pay for any justified and reasonable test-related accommodations to be provided to the candidate.

Examination Administration Conduct and Prohibitions Only the individual named on the registration roster will be permitted to take the examination. Candidates must present an official, valid picture identification card at check-in. No substitutions are allowed for registered candidates. Candidates are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times at the testing center. Test site personnel will dismiss any disruptive candidates from the site if, in the opinion of the test site administrator, the candidate is disturbing the testing environment. No refunds will be given to candidates expelled or required to leave the examination due to disruptive behavior.

10

No visitors are permitted in testing rooms (including children). Candidates may not bring food, beverages, coats, book bags, luggage, pagers, cell telephones, tape recorders, or other personal items to the examination desks. Each test site will make available to candidates a secured locker for all personal items prior to admission into the testing room. In addition, smoking and all electronic devices are prohibited in the test site. Programmable calculators, which are instruments that can store mathematical formulae, are prohibited. The use of nonprogrammable calculators is allowed. These calculators must be silent, have a selfcontained power source (battery), not include a printing mechanism, and not include a full alphabetic character set. Each candidate will be provided with scratch paper for use during the examination. Candidates will not be permitted to remove such paper after the completion of the examination.

Examination Results Notification and Score Report Upon completion of the examination, Sylvan Technology Center will immediately score the examination and provide candidates with both an on-screen report and a printed copy of results indicating a pass or fail status. Sylvan Technology Center then transmits scores to PMI at the end of the testing day.

The PMI Certification Department contacts each candidate by mail within fourteen (14) business days after the examination date to confirm examination results. Questions concerning the scoring of the examination should be directed to the PMI Certification Program Manager. Candidates must pass the examination in order to be awarded PMP certification status. Candidates failing the examination must repeat the examination to become certified. A re-examination form will be enclosed with the examination score report that is sent to applicants not passing the examination. In order to schedule a retake of the examination, this form must be completed and mailed to PMI Certification Department, Four Campus Boulevard, Newtown Square, PA 19703-3299 USA. This form must be used within one (1) year from the date of original application and payment.

PMI Test Security and Confidentiality Policy The PMP Certification Examination, item bank, scoring keys, answer sheets, work sheets, and any other examination or examinationrelated materials remain the sole and exclusive property of PMI. These materials are confidential and are not available for review by any person or agency for any reason.

the person or organization to whom the score should be revealed. Any violation of the PMI Test Security and Confidentiality Policy may be subject to disciplinary action(s) by the PMI Certification Department.

PMP Application and Certification Appeal Procedures The PMP Certification Program is administered and supervised by the PMI Certification Program Manager. All challenges regarding actions of and by the PMP Certification Program are governed by the comprehensive and exclusive rules contained in the PMP Certification Appeal Procedures. This appeals process is the only way to resolve any PMP application, eligibility, examination, qualification, professional development, and other certification challenges, complaints and/or claims of irregularities. A candidate or certificant may submit a request, in writing, for review of an adverse PMP Certification Program action, decision, or determination to the PMI Certification Program Manager, consistent with the requirements of the Certification Appeal Procedures.

Examination scores are confidential and will not be disclosed unless directed to do so by valid and lawful subpoena or court order. A candidate requesting that an examination score be released to a third party must provide PMI with a written request specifically identifying which examination score may be disclosed and
