Recommendations of the International Conference on ‘Science Society and Sustainability’ The three day international conference from 11th – 13th Jan 2012 focused on the theme ‘Many Species, One planet for posterity’. The delegates brought out following recommendations to the policy decision makers, governmental and nongovernmental agencies and educational institutions. Three thrust areas were identified as Education, Research and Networking 1. Education a. Institutionalizing concepts of sustainable development in educational institutions by embedding it in all disciplines with a reformed curriculum b. Promoting practicality of sustainability, intra-generational equity and inclusiveness in all educational activities and community outreach programmes c. Traditional wisdom and culture to complement modern knowledge of the environment in the development of a holistic approach to sustainability 2. Research a. Motivating and promoting quality research towards problem solving strategies and sustainable development using interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach b. Including the ethical dimensions that care for the planet and for posterity in all research initiatives c. Supporting , evaluating and initiating suitable follow up of the environmental policies and developmental strategies of government and non-governmental organizations 3. Networking a. Establishing an environmental forum on-line to encourage and coordinate the activities of various stakeholders for mutual benefits at national and international levels with particular reference to third world countries b. Sharing of knowledge and lessons learnt from different institutional models to be objectively emulated from local, regional, national and international contexts c. Capacity building through effective networking at all levels of society with emphasis on social justice in various forums
