REFEREEING BASKETBALL Before the game: What to bring: whistle, tennis shoes, black pants or black shorts, different shirt Arrive fifteen minutes prior to game time. Talk with: each coach to establish ground rules, length of periods, handling of substitutes (Normal is four 8 minute quarters running time, stopping only the last 2 minutes of each half which is when pressing is allowed.) the other referee to determine their knowledge of positioning on the court the timer to make certain they know when to stop the clock and length of periods the scorekeeper to make sure that they are recording fouls and alternating possessions During warm up: Check for legal uniforms. Practice tossing the jump ball. During the game: Keep the whistle in your mouth. Blow your whistle with authority. Stay opposite with your partner. Handle the ball. Talk to the players. Go to the scorekeeper to report fouls. Change position with your partner after reporting fouls. Use signals if you know them, without hurrying. If not, talk loud and clear so that your call is not a mystery to anyone. With a ball on the ground, do not hesitate to call a jump ball. Administer pressing the final two minutes of each half. Stay calm. Protocol Do not try to make the game fair by not calling something that you don’t want to call. Your job is to keep the game fair by calling what you see. If the teams are a miss-match, talk to the leading coach about sportsmanship which includes not running up scores. If they are doing what they can, so be it. Do not volunteer explanations of your calls. If coach or captain asks, pleasantly give an explanation. The coach is your best ally. If things get difficult, stop and talk things over. After the game, do not linger around and socialize.
