11 September 2015 Dear Parents and Carers A very warm welcome back to Wellfield at the start of this new term. I hope you all had an enjoyable summer break and despite the weather, managed to relax and enjoy some quality family time wherever that may have been. Inspire and Achieve GCSE Results: We achieved our best ever GCSE results for pupils, attaining the benchmark 5+ GCSE including English and Mathematics. There were also a number of subjects that performed significantly above national averages for attainment and progress. We will be formally publishing our results on our website once all re-marks have been completed. I would like to congratulate the pupils for their success and thank the staff for their hard work in making this our most successful year so far. Key Stage 3 and 4 Parent Information Evenings: Letters have been given out to all pupils inviting parents to attend our annual Parent Information Evening to explain some of the expectations, demands and course/examination requirements for pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4. We will also be sharing the various ways in which the school and parents can further support their pupils at Wellfield. The Key Stage 3 evening will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday 17 September, followed by the Key Stage 4 evening at 6 p.m. on Tuesday 22 September. They will last approximately 45 minutes and are being held in our theatre. We look forward to seeing as many parents there as possible. Rugby Academy: Next week we are launching our new initiative to develop our pupils’ sporting interests through the Wellfield Rugby Academy. As I stated in my newsletter before the summer break, the aim of the academy is to build the skills of pupils’ playing abilities in rugby and nurture the ethos of the sport throughout the school with the core values of rugby: Respect, Discipline, Sportsmanship, Teamwork and Enjoyment. Through the development of external links with the RFU and Sale Sharks we will help support achievement and aspiration at Wellfield. Pupils will be able to apply to be a part of the academy from next week. These application forms will need to be signed at home by a parent. Sale Shark Number Cruncherz: In partnership with the Sale Sharks, Year 7 will have a visit on Friday 25 September from a number of their rugby coaches and participate in a training session. Then either on Monday 5 or 12 October pupils will visit the Sale Sharks at AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester by coach, and be involved in sessions to develop their number and financial skills outside of the school environment. Letters for this trip will be sent out shortly and reply slips will need to be returned to school to permit pupils to attend the trip to Sale Sharks.

Free Rugby Tickets: Free Premiership Rugby tickets for first timers as part of the Wellfield Rugby Academy partnership with Sale Sharks. Follow this link or enter into your address bar of your internet browser: http://www.premiershiprugby.com/avivafirsttimers Challenge Inspection: We will receive a visit from Ofsted this term. The new inspection framework is much tougher but I am confident that we will have a positive outcome because of the improvements we have made since our last inspection in November 2013. I ask for parents help with providing evidence for the impending inspection by completing the Parent survey on Ofsted’s Parentview website https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk. I will ensure you have as much notice as possible to enable you to be able to complete or update this when we get the short notice. Duke of Edinburgh Expedition The Duke of Edinburgh Award final expedition is planned for the Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October. Prior to this, there will be a meeting for the parents of pupils involved in the expedition on Tuesday 22 September, at 5 .30 p.m. in the school canteen. Good luck to all involved. Extra-Curricular Activities: A copy of our autumn term Extra-Curricular activities and clubs is attached to this letter and is also available on our website. Nurture Uniform: Pupils have returned to school exceptionally smart on the whole, and we urge parents to contact their child’s Pastoral Manager should there be any issues. Mrs Yates – Years 7, 8 and 9; Mrs Gowerson – Years 10 and 11. Planners: All pupils have been issued a Planner and we ask for a £3.50 contribution towards the cost of this essential equipment item. PSHCE Wider World Day Year 7: On Thursday 24 September we will be holding a PSHCE day for Year 7 pupils covering a range of topics from Basic Life Saving to Fire Safety. A letter is being sent out by Miss Blakeley with further details for parents. Breakfast Club: A reminder that there is a Breakfast Club at school for all pupils. It is between 8.15-8.45am in the canteen. There is free cereal for every pupil. There are other breakfast items that pupils will be able to purchase. Spotlight Newsletter: Next week we will be sending out a copy of our colour newsletter “Spotlight”, covering a wide range of stories of events and activities at Wellfield over the last 6 months.

I am looking forward to a really exciting term for the school and pupils and thank you in advance for all your support. Yours sincerely
