25 September 2015 Dear Parents/Carers I am writing to you with updates and news from our third week back after the summer break. Inspire and Achieve GCSE Results: We have now published our GSCE results on our website, as is required by all schools. As I stated in our last newsletter, we achieved our best ever results this year. Pupils achieving 5+ A*-C GCSE’s including English and Maths increased 3% from last year to 50%. This puts Wellfield in second place out of the Leyland schools. This we believe, is testament to our focus on a traditional curriculum that has always placed academic GCSEs at the heart of what we knew would be the priorities for our pupils, as they move forward to further education and apprenticeships. Pupils’ progress in English and Maths remained constant at 65% for English and 61% for Maths. Our information is that there was again variation in these results for other schools. There were outstanding results in some subjects, in particular English Literature, Spanish and ICT all achieved 100% A*-C. In addition we have a range of subjects that achieved well above national average including History, Geography, R.E., Art, Photography, Business and Communication Studies, Catering, and P.E. These results demonstrate a genuine strength across a wide range of GCSE subjects but I am aware there is more to come. The staff and governors are committed in our continued drive to exceed these results in the future for all pupils. Key Stage 3 and 4 Parent Information Evenings: Thank you to all the parents who attended the Key Stage 3 and 4 Parent Information Evenings over the last 2 weeks. A copy of both presentations is available on the website in the Parents section. I hope these will act as a reminder for those parents who were able to attend as there was a lot of information shared on the evening. If you have any questions regarding anything in the presentations please do not hesitate to contact school. Online Curriculum: All schools are required to publish not only their GCSE results but also an overview of their curriculum. Our overviews of our curriculum can be found for all years in the Curriculum section of our website http://www.whs.lancs.sch.uk/index.php?category_id=178 Rugby Academy: We have launched our new initiative of the Wellfield Rugby Academy to all pupils. The deadline for initial applications is today. We will be announcing the successful applicants of this round of applications shortly. Sale Shark Number Cruncherz: Today Year 7’s have participated in rugby coaching with a number of the rugby coaches for Sale Sharks. Pupils will then participate in a visit on Monday 5 or Monday 12 October to Sale Sharks AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester. All permission slips should have been received back to school by now.

Challenge Duke of Edinburgh Expedition The final preparations are underway for the Duke of Edinburgh Award final expedition on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October. Good luck to all involved – we are praying for good weather for the expedition. Friends of Wellfield Bingo Night: Our PTA, the Friends of Wellfield, are hosting a Wine and Chocolate Prize Bingo Night at 7.15 p.m. on Friday 16 October at Leyland RAF Club. All are welcome and there is a £1 entry fee. We are requesting donations for prizes for the night and would like pupils and parents to donate chocolate prizes or wine. If you are donating wine we ask that parents bring it into the office and not allow pupils to bring it into school. Donations can be brought in from Monday 5 October. I thank you on behalf of the Friends of Wellfield in helping raise additional funds for the school. Extremism and Radicalisation: You will be aware that schools have a duty to prevent Extremism and Radicalisation. Miss Capaldi has shared this with pupils but there is also some support for parents on our website in the Parents section, under Advice and Support http://www.whs.lancs.sch.uk/index.php?category_id=188 . Nurture PSHCE Wider World Day Year 7: Yesterday (Thursday 24 September) we held a PSHCE day for Year 7 pupils covering a range of topics from Basic Life Saving with NWAS to Fire Safety with Lancashire Fire and Rescue. The pupils appeared to really enjoy the day and hopefully gained lots of valued skills and awareness about personal safety and a wider understanding of different issues. Open Evening: We are quickly approaching our Open Evening on Tuesday 29 September. The school will be closing early, at 12.30 p.m., on this day to prepare for the event and a sandwich service will be available to pupils at break time. If your son or daughter is helping out as a guide they will be required to be back at school for 5.15 p.m. in smart uniform. Thank you for your continued support of the school. Yours sincerely
