NCPA Three students and Dr. Siganga recently traveled to Philadelphia, PA, for the National Community Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting and Exposition. Students learned many great ways to create a niche in an independent community pharmacy and how to compete against large chain pharmacy corporations. The keynote speaker for this year’s meeting was Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner, who had a very positive message about setting goals and attaining them. In addition, students attended the annual Good Neighbor Pharmacy PruittSchutte Business Plan Competition to watch the top three business plan submissions from various universities present on their businesses-to-be. The SIUE Chapter of NCPA hopes to submit a business plan next year after observing the competition. If you’re interested participating on the business plan “team”, contact Dr. Siganga ([email protected]) ASAP.

Dates are currently being set for the annual NCPA Speaker Series this spring. Look for e-mail updates and messages on the TV monitors in UP200 and UP220! Lastly, at the beginning of the year the SIUE Chapter of NCPA made it a point to forge a stronger relationship with our local pharmacy organization, the Metro-East Pharmacists Association. We have managed to double our attendance at every meeting since the school year began (2 students in September, 5 students in October…and 10 in November!), which has certainly made a great impression with MEPA members. MEPA meets on the third Tuesday of every month (except December and the summer months) at 8:00 p.m. at the Four Pointes Hotel by Sheraton in Fairview Heights, IL. The cost of membership is only $5.00 for students. Meetings typically last for two hours, and include a CE program, hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and a business meeting.

ASCP October was a productive month for ASCP at SIUE as the Chili Cook-off Fundraiser went exceptionally well. Thank you to all the participants who entered chili and those who came to taste everyone’s creations! Winners were Andrew Schwierjohn for the original category and Cynthia Bailey for vegetarian. Hopefully next year will be as successful and

fun as this one! November and December will see another general meeting where there will be discussion about events planned for next semester. Planning for attending the ASCP midyear conference held in May of 2011 in Las Vegas is underway, and a few speakers have been tentatively planned for next semester.

APhA-ASP It’s hard to believe the end of year is already here, as members of APhA-ASP wrap up their projects this semester. Fall 2010 has been a very busy and productive time for our chapter, and members should be proud of our accomplishments. The newly renamed Operation OTC (formerly Operation Heartburn Awareness) represented APhA at the SIUE Homecoming Game and Chili Cook Off and offered counseling on OTC heartburn treatments for those taking part in the event as well as some top notch chili. Meanwhile the coordinators of the Medication Awareness Program (MAP), Michael Schmidt and Ryan Imel, have been hard at work educating the community about common medication issues. Both of these events were excellent opportunities to show the community what the practice of pharmacy is all about! This semester members also volunteered with the American Diabetes Association for the annual “Step Out Walk for Diabetes.” Participants on the School of Pharmacy

team include Kodi Cast, Micki Evansco, Sam Ferriozi, Anna Hufendick, Senayet Nigeda and Ashley Williams. Other members unable to attend the walk played a large role in helping our organization reach its fundraising goal. Members got even more exercise as they walked with our float, entitled “Harvesting Better Health down at the Pharmacy,” in the Edwardsville Halloween parade on October 31st, 2010. In addition to passing out candy, volunteers passed out informational leaflets created by Operation Immunization. The Midyear Regional Meeting also took place this fall in Cincinnati, OH. Thank you to Ryan Birk for organizing transportation and lodging for this event. Students in attendance participated in many great programs intended to aid students in creating a competitive edge after graduation and foster a passion for pharmacy advocacy, as well as provide resources for being an effective advocate. APhA is especially proud to announce that

this year, for the first time, student pharmacists were able to immunize on SIUE’s campus. P2 through P4 students who are certified immunizers gave over 1000 flu shots on main campus during the two weeks of clinics offered by Health Services. A big “thank you” is due to Dr. Jessica Kerr and the entire faculty for all of their hard work planning and supervising these clinics. Despite all of these great activities members still found time to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald house. Here they helped cook dinner for the families of children receiving care at area hospitals. Thank you to Laura Gleason and all volunteers for helping APhA make a positive impact within the community. And, in their spare time the executive committee has been planning a slew of great activities for the spring. Be sure to check your email for other great opportunities to represent our organization within the community.

SSHP SSHP has been busy getting ready for the Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, California. In late October SSHP held its local Clinical Skills Competition. We had great participation this year with 12 teams (24 students). Congratulations to our winners Lacy Gamblin and Krista Brown. They will be representing SIUE at the National Clinical Skills Competition at MCM, good luck! Our runners up to the clinical skills competition were Anna Hufendick and Nicole Nesselhauf. Last week three of our executive board members attended the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacist (ICHP) Leadership Retreat along with some SIUE faculty members. They participated in leadership training and strategic planning for the upcoming year. After winter break SSHP will have its next member meeting on January 11th. At this meeting we will hold a credentials board where you can learn everything you want to know about the ABC’s of pharmacy. We will have different members of the faculty describe their specialties and how they obtained their credentials. Don’t forget to check out our student articles in the monthly publication of Keeposted!

Rho Chi Rho Chi inducted new members and elected new officers from the class of 2012 in September. We sold SIUE-SOP car decals as our first fundraiser of the year. In October, we met to discuss goals for the year and other fund raising ideas. Some of the possible fundraisers for next semester are a Super Bowl Soup Cook-Off and a "peripheral brain" sale. We also hope to have a Rho Chi faculty award given at the scholarship banquet and a Rho Chi guest speaker at our induction ceremony next year.

SNPhA The Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) has enjoyed a very good semester thus far. The highlight of this current Fall semester has been our volunteer work with the National Kidney Foundation at the Kidney Early Evaluation Program Screening at Shalom Church in Florissant, Missouri, on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Under the leadership of our president Erika Campbell, over seventeen students offered their help, working with other healthcare professionals to screen a total of 94 participants. This is the third consecutive year SNPhA has participated in the program, and received praise words that have reached the Dean’s office.

On November 20, SNPhA also had a Blood Pressure Screening at the Collinsville Walmart; more information available in the next issue. SNPhA is also underway with many fundraiser opportunities, including the annual SIUe Fleece Sale, the new SIUe Christmas Ornament Sale, and the annual SOP Candy Grams. We expect good returns on these fundraisers and hope the entire school enjoys our products! We are also looking into a project code-named “Art Exhibition.” We are looking for artists of any kind who would like to show off their talents to our school and community. As plans go so far, there will be opportunities for live music, a sale/auction of different art pieces/CDs, and more. If you are interested in such an event, please contact SNPhA by emailing [email protected] ASAP. There will be one last meeting on December 7 for all to come, where we will have our “Taste of Culture Part II: Holidays’ snacks!” Expect to see (and eat!) holiday dishes from around the world. We hope to see you there! We are eagerly waiting for the new semester to come and we wish to meet more and more of you! If you have any questions concerning SNPhA, you are more than welcome to contact any of the executive board members!

Class of 2011 The Class of 2011 is enjoying our much needed break while preparing for both residency and job interviews. We had a great turnout to our first fundraiser of the year at Neruda and would like to thank everyone that came to support our class and the Glen-Ed pantry. We are also getting excited about our 4th annual holiday sweater party which will take place December 10th at Stagger Inn. The event has always been a lot of fun and the person that wears the craziest holiday outfit wins bragging rights and a prize. So if anyone needs a break from studying for finals, please join us for an unforgettable time and some very interesting outfits. We hope to see everyone there.

Class of 2012 The Class of 2012 has had a great start to the school year! We have been busy with many fund-raising and social activities. In addition, we are beginning to map out how and where we’ll be spending our P4 year, as well as our future careers. On November 5, the Class of 2012 sponsored the Second Annual School of Pharmacy Talent Show at the Collinsville VFW. We had a fantastic turnout and an incredible display of talent from several pharmacy students…and even faculty! We even had the pleasure of hearing a stirring rendition of Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” by our emcees, Maestro

Dr. Tim McPherson and Cody Sandusky. Our outstanding judges for the evening, Drs. Chris Lynch, Kelly Gable, and Keith Hecht, had perhaps the most difficult task for the evening – choosing the top three performances from the many talented performers. The top prize this year went to The Sex Pestles, followed by Brandon Edwards in second place, and The P3 Divas in third place. The audience choice award this year went to The Sex Pestles. The Class of 2012 owes a debt of gratitude to Erika Campbell and Colleen Sheehan, who did a phenomenal job of putting the show together! We’d like to thank everyone who helped out, donated items, and attended this great fund-raiser!

Class of 2013 We are currently working on multiple fundraising events that we have planned for the year. On December 3rd we are having our 2nd annual Bowling Fundraiser. The event is going to be held at Airport Bowl, Bethalto. The cost of $15 per person includes shoe rentals, 3 hours of bowling, DJ and a dance floor to keep you hopping like a kangaroo till late into the night. Please register ahead of time if you like having a good time. As everyone at SOP knows, the class of 2013 is organizing the “Dancing

With

The Professors!” on February 5th, 2011. What you may not know is that this event is a 100% charity event, which means we will donate 100% of the profit made from this event to a charity of the winning

couple’s choice. We have 5 couples who will be participating in the dance off. The couples are: Dr. Jessica Kerr and Blake (student in SIUE dance department); Dr. Ken Witt and Dr. Karin Sandoval; Dr.Lisa Lubsch and The Dean, Gireesh Gupchup; Dr. Cathy Santanello and Dr. Marcelo Nieto and Dr. Stacey Thacker and her husband, Adam Thacker. The five couples are also dancing for the following charities, respectively: Veteran’s Affairs Assistance Program, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, American Lung Association, Metro East Humane Society, and CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. I would encourage everyone here at SIUE SOP to support the cause by coming out and watching your professors dance for a charity.

We have also begun planning for our next major fundraiser, the Golf Scramble. Last year we hosted the event in conjunction with the graduating Class of 2010, which was a great success. The Golf Scramble will be held at the same location as last year, Fox Creek on April 23rd, 2011. Stay tuned for more info. Finally, on behalf of Class of 2013, Happy Holidays to everyone here at SIUE SOP. Sincerely, Sal Khondaker

Class of 2014 Our first officer meeting was November 11th. We met to discuss future fundraising ideas and activities for our class. Our first Class meeting will be December 2nd at 10:00 a.m. We recently worked 2 Ram’s games in order to raise money for our class.

We’re on the web! http://www.siue.edu/ pharmacy/SRC.shtml

There will be a P1 sponsored ‘Study Break’ on December 10th. Coffee and bagels will be supplied.

We are currently working on getting a Powder Puff Football Game fundraiser together that will involve students and faculty.
