Staff Members: Jessica Krause – Admissions Counselor Janelle Maricque – Advisor and Career Services Coordinator Nicole Schneider – Research Analyst As a College, we have an enormous gift to give. We give the gift of enhancing the lives of our students and the gift of teaching you the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in your career. Our commitment as faculty, staff, and administration is to place our students first. Of course in the long run, our success will be measured by the accomplishments of our students, and the level of leadership they assume in their profession. It is our duty to serve as role models and leaders. But more than that, it is our responsibility to make a positive and lasting difference to our students. Your success at Bellin College is a joint responsibility with the faculty, staff, and administration. Here are a few tips to help you succeed:  Take every opportunity to learn to be a nurse, an Educator, a FNP, or a radiologic technologist.  The biggest challenge for most students is time management. Don’t overextend yourself, and make sure that you are “putting in the time” outside of classes, labs, and clinical experiences.  Do not succumb to frustration. If you have trouble, be sure to see your professors. You have an active advising system available to you, and you need to make use of it if you feel you may be falling behind.  If Graduation is near, stay focused until the end…your success depends on it!  Remember, you are here because you had a vision to become a nurse or radiologic technologist. Hold on to that vision as you work toward your personal success.  Best of luck this academic year! My door is always open if you want to talk as I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you. Remember: “Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”

Student Organizations: Opportunities to Engage at Bellin College Dr. Nancy Burruss Dean of Student Services Learning takes place in every aspect of your College experience. Not only within the classroom but outside of the classroom. Our campus and the surrounding community have the potential to be filled with challenges and opportunities. Students who are involved outside of class feel a stronger sense of community and are more satisfied with their overall College experience. Student organizations are a great way to meet other students, nursing and radiology, while exploring your interests, developing leadership skills, and being an active part of the College community. There are several organizations on campus that meet regularly, host programs and events, and provide service to the community. Student organizations such as Bellin Student Nurse Association (BSNA), Student Senate, Open School for Health Care Professionals (IHI), and the Ambassador Club. When you engage outside the classroom in student organizations you:  Develop your strengths and interests  Meet new people and network  Reinforce what you are learning as a professional  Develop your skills as a leader  Prepare for your future career  Gain valuable real-world experience working with others  Develop characteristics for success Consider joining and actively engaging in one of our student organizations and make the most of your Bellin College experience!

Student Senate Student Senate is an organization that allows students to organize and actively participate in the decision-making of student services and activities. It is also a means for students to have an active and open dialog with Bellin College Administration. Over the course of the year, Student Senate sponsors several Collegewide events that promote student involvement and/or wellness. All students are members of Bellin College’s Student Senate and are welcome to attend meetings, although, there are representatives from each class who will report back with any

important information. Student Senate is an easy and fun way to get involved at Bellin College. It allows students to voice their opinions and make a difference. Everyone is welcome and we love to see new faces! 2013-2014 Meeting Dates: To be announced… Please visit the Student Senate webpage for more information, upcoming events, and meeting days, times, and location.

Save the Date! Higher Learning Commission (HLC) College Re-Accreditation Visit: April 7, 8 and 9, 2014 Bellin College is scheduled for its re-accreditation visit with the Higher Learning Commission next spring, April 7, 8, and 9, 2014. Accreditation ensures students, as well as employers, that our students are receiving a quality education. Without it a college may not be eligible for participation in federal and state financial aid programs. Proper accreditation is also important for the transfer of college credit, and is a prerequisite for many graduate programs. The College currently has 3 accreditations: 

The Higher Learning Commission, which gives as “permission” to teach and function as an institution of higher education;

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE): the primary reviewer of our BSN and MSN programs (review due 2018)

The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT): the reviewer of our BSRS program (review due 2015)

Preparation for this visit is underway, the College is working to compile the necessary information to present to the reviewers in the spring.

So, what do you need to do? Nothing at this point. We simply want you to be aware of this project. During the semester, you may be asked by a faculty member to use a paper, project, presentation, or portfolio that you completed as an example of work that meets program outcomes. As we get closer to the visit, we’ll be asking for student volunteers to sit down with the HLC reviewers to share your Bellin College student experiences. This is an exciting time for the College! It gives us the opportunity to do a thorough review of our processes, to show what we are doing well, and to examine those areas where we can improve. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Dr. Kathy Zellner.

HESI Update: For all Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors: Course activities are well underway, and with that comes studying for exams, clinical preparation, and general review! Don’t forget to incorporate your Evolve / HESI resources into your study plan. Please regularly access your resources at www.evolve.elsevier.com and take advantage of the Case Studies and Patient Reviews that are available. These will help you prepare for the content-specific exams, prep for or review clinical scenarios, as well as provide additional review for your courses. Research studies have shown that students who actively use the case studies and patient reviews as part of their study plan are more likely to pass the nursing licensure test following graduation!
